What do you think makes a better carry weapon?

A Sig sauer p220 or a 1911?

Please don't answer which ever one you shoot better or which one feels better or well you get the Idea.

Like which one in your opinion would be more reliable and better for carry.

I carried a 1911 for many many yrs and several other brands and have finely been carrying a sig p220 ss elite for the last few yrs.

Sig because it's quicker to the draw without worrying about a safety. I going get flamed on here by the old generation and there workhorse 1911 but I just faster with a sig to the draw! Points better and just a absolute delight!

1911....( and I carry one ) ....because its the gun I shoot the best / and it fits my hands, etc....

Wilson Combat CQB model in a 5" in .45 acp is my primary carry gun ...and I'll stack its reliability up against any gun made ( and mine is about 10 yrs old and has at least 20,000 rds thru it now...and I find the thumb safety and the grip safety ...easy to deal with ( and I've done it for a long time )....not that a Sig 220 is unreliable, they are a very good gun ...but the trigger is not better than a well made 1911...in my opinion. I have an all stainless Sig 220 as well...but I don't carry it ...or my Sig 226's, etc.../ if I want a light gun to carry, I will carry a Sig 239 in .40 S&W or a 4" 1911 with an alloy frame ...

Any 1911 I ever bought, needed ramp polishing's, extractor tunings, they also tended to chip/break. Magazines' were crap!

The Sig 220 is real deal quality, and expensive. Worth every penny.

When your life depends on what is in your holster, I would pick a Sig 220, against a Colt 1911. But you know my choice... (Glock 19gen4, TruGlo sights)

1911s are good but a P220 is more practical in the modern era.

For me, of the 2 listed, it is the 1911. I find the 1911 far more comfortable in my hand as well as to shoot than the 220, for some reason the 220 feels out of balance to me. However I do have a sig P-226 that gets carried as well as my 1911's.

I carry my P220 some and it does very well with a decent holster and belt. I have a 1911 that I never really carry, but it’s one of the basic GI models from Springfield and while it runs pretty well has once or twice been a little finicky.

I have both, & carry both. If both have alloy frames, the weight is about the same, if the 1911 is a steel frame & the Sig is alloy, advantage Sig. In an OWB holster I perceive little difference. IWB, the 1911 is thinner, thus more comfortable. I do believe the Sig has slightly less perceived recoil, too. I'm glad I don't have to choose, I carry whatever calls to me that particular morning when I put my pants on.

The 1911 is more comfortable no matter where you carry it.

That is mainly because it is thinner, which also makes it easier to conceal.

I'd rather have to deal with a thumb safety than start out with a DA pull, which is the Sig's "safety."

The 1911 is American-made and reeks class. The Sig has to import it.

For a concealed carry gun, between the two you suggest, I would go with the Sig 220. Many of the reasons have been stated, but I'll just sum mine up:

1) No safety- while safeties keep the trigger from firing when you don't want to fire, they can also keep the trigger from firing when you want to fire.

2) Double Action trigger- for a first round shot, personally, I want the extra weight of a DA trigger, mostly to help offset my adrenaline.

I like my 1911, believe me. But for carry, I pull out my CZ-75 BD (essentially the same benefits as the 220).

Baloney. Thickness is only relevant when carrying IWB, and the difference in thickness between a 1911 and a Sig 220 is not enough to be significant when carried OWB/SOB/Shoulder. Hyperbole does not lend itself well to a successful argument.

1911 isn't any slower. It takes less time to flick the safety off than it does to get on target.

As for the OP, "better" is subjective.

Some people like their clunky old 1911s with a consistent trigger pull, even though they have to train to take off a manual safety, and to put the manual safety back on before re-holstering.

Some people like crunchentickers, and would rather train to transition from a first shot double action trigger pull to single action, and train to decock and re-holster.

This really is a six-of-one-half-dozen-of-the-other kind of thing.

That said, I like my P220. And I really like 1911s, Hi-Powers, Glocks, and revolvers.

I don't have a sig, but i'd probably go there for quicker draw, and a little lighter, generally speaking. Yes there's some pretty light 1911s, I know.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 1911, but it's heavy and long both disadvantages for a carry gun (although heavy does help in recoil, quicker second shots, etc.).

Sig P220. Unless you like carrying locked-and-cocked (I don't), I much prefer a DA/SA like the P220.

I would not choose either- both are too heavy. I did the 5" steel 1911 for a year.

Got an EMP.

Still a 1911, but less weight by far.

Watch it there, Pup. I love the 1911, but I would vote for the Sig as I, too, prefer the DA/SA to cocked & locked.
