Future profit potential of print media
I am curious if SWAT print edition is staying profitable in relation to nonprint media. Will the print edition take up a smaller part of the business as internet media becomes a bigger part of the picture?

FT-
The print issues began holding their own 3 years after we took over. The Online PDF's could never support the budget. Though the sales are brisk, the vast majority of people (myself included) prefer to actually handle the magazine. Rich

PDF's are easy to archive in case the original gets damaged. But I have to agree that the print version is much nicer to handle.

I remember watching a debate between two professors, one waxing poetic about the wonders of whole libraries available on the computer. The other just poopoo'd the notion and said that while the knowledge was great, people would never surrender the profound joy of the written word in hand.
He was right. I can't sit through a single chapter on the net, but I'll bury my nose in "the real thing" for hours on end.

Yeah! Do you know how much trouble it is to lug a laptop to the john???
I just bought my third copy off the newsstand today... I'll say that if it weren't on the newsstand three months ago, I still wouldn't know about the publication (or this website)... ...of course, that might have been a good thing for Y'ALL Nah, just kidding. |

A perrenial question for all PRINT. I once thought that print would vanish, and there are technologists working on that now. Basically, as long as a printed magazine goes where a tablet computer can't, it will flourish and the properly crafted periodical will profit:
- Public mass transit such as airplanes - Doctor's waiting rooms and reception areas - Hotel rooms - Conferences - Restrooms - lying around a room waiting to be read - Reading material in cabins that lack electricity - Reading on the beach, in a boat etc. - passed around the locker room - clipped - used to SWAT flies etc.. |
