Round count in IDPA vs IPSC

Hi,

In general, is it true that you shoot more rounds with IPSC than IDPA?

Can you get away with shooting IDPA without reloading your own ammo?

IDPA=18 rounds per stage, USPSA (IPSC)=32 rounds per stage for sanctioned matches.

Not all USPSA stages will need max rounds, but ours average 25 rounds/stage. Typically 5 or 6stages, so 125-150 rounds, if there are no re-shoots and all steel goes down 1st shot.

As for needing to reload ammo, that is up to you. Shooting 45acp drove me into reloading. 9mm would have taken longer, but reloading would have happened regardless.

I've shot plenty of IDPA on factory ammo. That of course was when you could swing by Walmart and grab a couple of 9mm value packs for $11.98.

Round counts much higher for USPSA at any decent club. More stages, more rounds/stage, and more steel!

That said, my local IDPA club we'd often shoot the match over again with a different gun, different class or whatever. I've shot 3 matches in a night.

For sure a higher round count at a typical USPSA match. I have run into some shooters at IDPA matches that part of the reason they were there was they liked the lower round count because they were buying factory ammo. If you reload, the round count is not as much of a factore..I like both, but shooting more is always good for me. Mark

In my area, IDPA matches run 80-100 rounds, and USPSA matches run 150-200. When I started in the sport, almost fifteen years ago, USPSA matches were running closer to 120 rounds. I found out today that a local club's monthly match, as opposed to a "major" or sanctioned match, required a minimum of over 300 rounds. The match started at about 10:00, and they may still be shooting.

IDPA does have a lower round count, but realistically you can shoot either without reloading - particularly if you're just doing a local club match per month. Depending on which match I go to, I tend to shoot 100 to 150 rounds at a local match. In factory ammo, that's about $40. As a monthly cost, that isn't bad.

That said, handloading does certainly help out if you can take that step. I typically just grab extra brass left at a local public range so my bras costs are nothing.

Most reloads are about 5gr of powder, so a 1lb can of powder (about $20) will do 1400 rounds.

Lead bullets run about $60/1000, FMJ about $80/1000. Primers run about $30/1000.

So total cost for me would be $15 for 150 rounds of lead or $19 for FMJ. Over a 50% savings.

NOTE: All that is for 9mm prices, and 9mm is one of the cheapest factory rounds there is (and its still worth it for me). If you shoot .40S&W or .45 ACP you'll see a MUCH higher savings.
