Kahr p380...

This part of the Kahr manuals always confuses me...
The manual recommends retracting the slide and locking it back using the slide stop.

They recommend pushing down on the slide stop to load the first round.
Unlike most guns, they do not recommend chambering a round by by pulling back the slide and letting the gun "slingshot" the 1st round into the chamber.

This seems like a time consuming extra step.
I have hear some reports stating that you can "slingshot" the rounds into the chamber after the gun is suitably broken in.

What is the real deal here?

Kahrs are tighter than most pistols(most QUALITY pistols are), they have a lot tighter tolerances and need to be broken in a bit before there is more wiggle room for the round to be chambered by slingshot. A lot of ppl dont quite pull all the way back, so on a new kahr(with a very stiff guiderod spring) dont pull back all the way to get the most transfer of potential to kinetic energy to chamber the round.

I happen to think its a lot easier just to put a mag in and press the slide release.

You can compare your Kahr to say a glock or any other popular striker pistol and ull see how tight they are compared to others. When you shake a kahr, there is no rattling or anything like that of the barrel. when I shake my S&W 99 or my glock 22 or ruger lcp that I had....you hear stuff rattling around.

Do you think that with time, you can confidently slingshot a round into the chamber?

While we're at it, it seems like the two springs need to be replaced
in exact fashion after cleaning.

Do you think it's easier just to clean them in place rather than risking replacing them incorrectly?

I dont see why you would even want to slingshot it, but yes you should be able to after a while. Dont be scared to take the springs out.. just pay attention to how they go back in. Its just a spring, you can only put it back wrong 1 way. youll be fine.

OK...

I would also have no problem with slingshotting the 1st round if you intended to
carry the gun in Condition 1.

With it's long pull, DAO trigger, it might be inclined for this type of carry.

On the other hand, if you didn't want to carry in Condition 1, it seems like
pressing down on the slide release introduces a time consuming extra step.

I carry either a Kahr MK40 or P380 depending on the day. I would simply never carry a gun that wasn't in condition 1 whether 1911 style cocked & locked or DAO semis.

Exactly... why the heck would you carry it empty? You think your going to have time to rack the slide? lol

question the most reliable way to load the first round, in this or any
other pistol. "Slingshotting" is dependent on good technique for
success, especially for small pistols. I myself drop the slide to load
all my semi-auto pistols, not just my Kahrs.

I've found that Kahr tells it like it is. They also recommend that
an owner of a new Kahr should run a couple hundred rounds through
a new pistol before they rely on it. This is good advice for any pistol,
but Kahr is the only manufacturer that recommends this that I'm aware
of.

Carrying a pistol without a round in the chamber is bad thinking. I will
leave it at that.

I use slide release has worked perfect every time . I do that on my 1911's also
