By dire emergency, do you mean fighting for your life after the BATF decides it's NOT a reasonable reason to own one?

Wolfe.

I think this is the thread you read before (specifically, post #9): http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...d.php?t=110809

On that note, I'll step back and let someone who knows much more about the legalities and small details take over. It seems like you'd be walking on thin ice with the BATFE, though, with the ability to convert to FA in little time.

It's as illegal as sin. Give it up. You plan on getting a jig that modifies the sear but you won't install it? Right... You don't want a felony hanging over your head do ya?

I do subcontract work for people whole want parts machined for suppressors. I've had to tell several to piss off because they can't be bothered to get the stamp first.

Okay, break it up. Move along. Nothing to see here - - -

Looks as if everyone's pretty well had their say. There are some conflicting opinions, and I'm always glad to see members able to differ on issues without getting personal, but this is rather non-productive.

Even BATFE has issued some partly conflicting opinions from time to time on this issue. An assembled, unregistered machine gun is clearly illegal. Having possession of a full set of Sten Gun parts and a separate receiver tube, even though never assembled, has been ruled illegal absent proper paperwork. I really believe there's enough ambiguity in the auto sear area to allow the unwary or careless to really get into trouble.

I believe this topic has pretty well run its course.

Best,
Johnny
