Come on guys, a .454 Casull will smoke a 10mm or a .460 Rowland any day of the week.

10mm vs. .454Casul?

The .454 will blow it away, no question. Not even in the same league.

SRH 454 (your choice of barrel) seems to me to be the best. You have the choice off mild 45colt all the way up to those "Grenades" brizbane referenced. Awesome description brisbane by the way!

I hope no one is even comparing the power between a 10mm and 454. That said, the ability of the shooter is just as much part of the equation as caliber. The beauty of a Glock 10mm is the ability to dump a lot of ammo in a short amount of time (accurately). Snub nose recovers suck for anything but close quarters shooting, especially with heavy kicking calibers. I am a handgun hunter and I won't carry a large caliber in less than a 6" barrel. I prefer the 44mag to hunt with over the 454casull for many reasons I won't get into now.
I choose the Glock 20 as my general woods gun. It's not perfect but its a good compromise between firepower and shootability. When I am moving large black bear(400-700lbs) from behind my house, I have my G20 on my hip and a 12guage pump in my hands. I have had a few black bear bluff charge me and snap their jaws. A handgun doesn't give me the comfort factor as a 12guage rifle does.

A 454 SRH gives you the ability to choose how much power you can handle, and with factory loads. A 4" standard RH in 44mag or 45Colt could approach this same versatility with a slight reduction in cartridge power.

I know I'm probably in the minority for suggesting it, but the .357 has given the best chance of walking away from a bear attack historically. One of the universities up here (I forget which) looked at the data involving firearm use against bear attacks. They found that 1.) Bear spray is 90% effective at stopping a bear attack, beating every firearm category, and 2.) The weapon with the best percentage of stopping an attack before an injury (to the human ) was the .357. I believe the 30-06 was next. The .44 and bigger categories didn't fare so well.

It's been said previously - the best is whatever you can shoot effectively. The study inferred the folks running around with the bigger guns couldn't shoot them effectively, while someone with a .357 was able to shoot a quality round and PLACE IT EFFECTIVELY.

It goes back to the Inuit woman who took down the polar bear with a .22lr - she put the round through the eye and into the brain cavity. Not that I'd recommend recreating the feat, but hitting your target with an adequately-built round seems a lot more important than shooting a grizzly bear in the tail with a .454!

That's true, but then why not go 500 Magnum? Many people can handle 10mm or 460 Rowland without a lot of problem to me the 454 is just too much pistol..

454 does have a bonus though if you miss, it could still blind or even torch the bear with all that flame.. but no for me not a fun gun..
