what's the rating category for for each thread?

I've never seen it used either. What gives?

Sorta like the free first aid kit in your new car. It's a feature.

Few ever open the box.

Not sure it works today.
Gave this thread a 5 when only one post...
Refreshed and looked....no rating.
Tried it again and was told that I had already voted.

But....do we care ?

Can't have an average with only one datum, or there may be a higher threshold. I too rated the thread a 5. There are now five stars at the far right of the line just below the thread title. Now we need someone to skew the data to see if we get whole stars only, or if fractional stars are possible.

Curiouser and curiouser...

Go to the forums through the index and there is a rating column (data field). Use the search functions and results are returned without ratings. I suspect that I am not alone in almost never going through the index-I use either the View New Posts option or search functions. Only when I have fumblefingered away my cookie have I needed the index. Not that it matters, this may be the only rated thread here.

Addendum:

So I discovered the rest of the sorting bar near the bottom of the page and found that there are 38 rated threads. Yes, I am bored!

In summary, it is a little used feature of little use.

"Sorta like the free first aid kit in your new car. It's a feature.

I guess I'm one of the few, the proud, the klutzy...

It seems as if every time I work on my car I'm digging into my first aid kit.

In fact, thanks for reminding me. I need more band aids in the stupid thing!

Actually, I would gladly sacrifice both the rating utility and the unused blank second column for a cookie driven, member flag. Memory being what it is, if I could mark a thread +, -, or 0 (yea, nay, or neutral) perhaps I could avoid that sinking feeling as I reopen a thread I really don't want to read again.

Dr. Seuss was right, old age is not for sissies. He just didn't warn it could begin so early.

Now that is a good idea Huck. But we at TFL aren't the ones who can implement it. Send the suggestion to vBulletin and see what they think of it.

Naturally you wouldn't give a private rating to every thread, so I don't think it would take up a lot of cookie space.

As a test

I rated it the lowest and now we are down to two stars. I doubt that I will ever use it.

Mal H,

I fired off e-mail to vBulletin as you suggested. Their response was mostly boiler plate but did contain one noteworthy point. They say that the suggestion might have to come from The Firing Line. Clearly, they know who the paying customer is.

Tag, you're it!
