Size of Remiington 1863 Pocket Pistol / Plating longer lasting than brass ?
Here is picture I copied from logan5779 in the C+R forum and that shows how small the Remington 1863 poacket pistol is - or maybe a fairly large hand
Anyone know of longer lasting plating than brass (doubt I can afford GOLD) ? I'd prefer to deal with an outfit that could remove/replace the barrel and the interior parts of the frame so I didn't wind up with a plated hammer/trigger spring, but I suppose I could pay a gunsmith to do that for me and just ship the frame. I could remove the parts myself, but as always, putting them back together is the tricky part. I think I remember reading about somekind of Anodizing on steel as an alternative to plating, but I can't remember where I read it. IMHO, looks of the brass frames just can't be beat - but it evidently won't support using a .32 S+W conversion cylinder, so I'm looking for something to put on-top-of a steel frame will look like brass, but will wear better than brass plating. Based on how much I ejnoy shooting an 1858 with a 45 long Colt conversion sylinder, I'd probably be shooting this pocket gun quite a bit. . Last edited by cwok; March 11, 2013 at 02:54 PM. Gold plating is actually softer than brass. Anodizing can not be done to steel.
That leaves you with titanium nitride coating, which is very durable but prohibitively expensive. Nickel plating is probably a better bet- though it's only slightly yellow. |

CWOK... this is my 32 S&W conversion...
just a little bigger than yours... as far as finishes... that's going to be tough... if you want the yellow color, & something durable... maybe find someone who can plate it with Titanium Nitride ( I think that is an option on Desert Eagles, & comes out looking like "gold" ) otherwise maybe nickel coating would be better, may make it look more period as well ???

Not trying to hijack the thread but if you look at the engraving from Bill DeShivs and you don't say OOOOH WOW...something is bad wrong with your eyes. I usually don't get off on engraving firearms, but I do appreciate fine art, and Bill is a true artist of metal.
