Case collapse help
I am new to reloading, today got uber frustrated.
40 S&W Rcbs press and die. Resizing and neck widening went great, no issues. I do a light press, turn bullet and then full seat the bullet. Previously about 1 of 20, the case wall would collapse (looks wavy), the case wall is crumpled. Then today, every other case/bullet is collapsed, or crumpled. My questions, 1) how do I avoid this? 2) the crumpled bullets are no good to fire? I should tear down and rebuild? Thanks Last edited by Pirelli; February 26, 2012 at 05:42 PM. |

Maybe you're not belling the case mouth quite enough. Are you also trying to crimp at the same time you're seating? Try backing off your seating die quite a bit then just screw it in a quarter of a turn at a time. Cast or jacketed bullets? Measure the diameter of your bullets if none of the above helps.
BTW, a loaded round is also called a cartridge not a bullet. The crumpled brass is probably not worth trying to re-size. Report back what you find. BTW, you can pull the bullets and re-use them and the powder. Regards and good luck for you. Hobie |

I think 1Hobie is correct...the case mouth is too narrow. After you Bell the case mouth you should be able to insert a bullet far enough that it won't fall out when turned upside down. The cases should not be reused...the bullets and powder should be OK.
Also check to make sure your lock ring is tight and that the die hasn't moved in the press. |
