Until Super-Dave tells us he's talking about great ol' big monster bears, bigger'n WildAlaska and Wyobohunter put together, doubled and re-doubled, verily like unto a hand of Bridge, let's stay with Florida-sized sorta-little bears, okay? And there ain't many Biggies in the Appalachicola National Forest...

I do agree w/Art

An AK-47 is probably good medicine for little eastern blackies.

An AK with the right ammo is quite sufficient for eastern black bear. No need for 30 round magazines either.

As I mentioned earlier, a black bear was killed here in Waynesboro years ago by some doofus with a .22. He shot the bear nineteen times but I think that was either poor shot placement, an abundance of enthusiasm, or both.

Seeing as how this county has no open season on black bear, the shooter was quite upset about the reaction of the fish and wildlife people. Not to mention quite a bit poorer.

Where bear don't break 300 lbs, an AK with 150-grain SP should be just fine.

Big black bear, and all Griz, Brown, and Polar, would require a bit more margin for comfort. It still may be years before I make it to Alaska, but when I do, I plan on carrying one of my .35 Whelens or a Brenneke-loaded Mossberg 500. Hell, years ago I tried to convince Randy Garrett to load some of his .45/70 bullets in a shotgun shell for Joe Sixpack, but he wasn't interested. Fortunately, there are lots of recent slugs that would work fine.

Superdave ,
I just noticed you were hoping to trade a shotgun, pistols, a great dane, a pitbull, and a porno collection for an AK-47. I would assume this means you don't have an AK now.

If I were worried about being attacked in "grizzly bear country" as you have said. I would keep your shotguns, pistols great danes and pitbulls and sleep peacefully at night.

If all of that fails throw your porno collection at him!

Ok, since we are playing.... a real AK (military with select fire). 30 rnd mag loaded with fmj. Switch to auto and let her rip! Should be able to slow him down quite a bit.

By the way, be careful not to slip and fall on all the spent cases.

... and a friend with a camcorder somewhere safe nearby so we can all enjoy the youtube video afterwards. lol!

Just kidding! Good luck with your AK and stay clear of the bears. Proper storage of your food when out in the wild does wonders. I have to admit I was tempted recently by an AK in the local classifieds but I resisted since I really had my eye on something else.

I think instead of hunting bare you should wear hunting clothes.

I just want to know if you were in a situation where you had to defend your life against a grizzly, would an ak-47 be sufficient. I know the hunting laws and ethics.....I just want to know if it would be sufficient.
Sure beats throwing rocks or shooting it with a 22LR. Hope you enjoy your new toy.

I've got a Norinco SKS that takes AK mags. Leave the pitbull out and send me some pictures of the Great Dane, we might have a deal. I'll probably need a little cash or maybe some ammo thrown in too.

if its big game, anything less than the 45-50 cal biggies? would be like swatting a fly off a raging bull and seeing if it reacts...ak's and and sks suck for stopping power, great for "suppressive fire"...

if you want to prove me wrong, i want to see it on youtube or something!

its better then nothing but a little werid using the ak47 for a reason such as hunting bear or bear defense. MAYBE if you were at your cabin but if your walking around the bush its not like were in iraq here. if your that worried find a 45-70 lever action marlin. If you want to go a little cheaper then a NEF has a single shot 45-70 with an 18 '' barrel would be easy and compactm, saw one the other day I would of picked it up if I hadnt just bought an ar.

If you put it on auto and a 30 rd magazine, that should do the job. By the way, you did say AK 47.

I think I'd trade the AK in for a saiga .308. Same idea but a lot more power.

If all I had was an AK and a bear charging then I'd try to make it work. Not a situation I'd try to get myself in.

I do think that bolt action and single shots are poor choices for bear defense, I'd rather an ak with a couple 5 round magazines vs a lever action in .30-30 that holds 4.

And for bear I'd always use soft point if given a choice.

self defense-Yes

if it is common knowledge that a 44 mag will defend against a brown bear, then why wouldnt a MUCH more powerful rifle with Alot more ammo?I think its 2-3xs the power of a 44 magnum

^^^^^ Huh?????

I wouldn't carry a little 44 rem mag for brown bear, or an AK... My minimum would be a 454 or 12 ga. I don't think the extra ammo in that AK will do you much good either.

This thread is absolutely ridiculous. What kind of bear are we talking about? I don't think the 7.62x39 is suitable for any kind of bear but it would definitely be ridiculous for grizzly or brown bear.

For those that say the 7.62x39 is equal to the 30-30 I really get tired of hearing that. While energy wise that is true, the 7.62x39 is designed as an anti-personnel round. The 30-30 uses 150-170 gr bullets for big game. The 7.62x39 comes up very short in bullet weight for hunting purposes. The 7.62x39 is NOT the same as the 30-30 for hunting purposes. I get really tired of people making that claim. Energy isn't everything folks. Actually energy means absolutely nothing when we are talking about bullets with a MV of less than 2500fps. Bullets impacting at around or above 2500fps impart hydrostatic shock on game animals which has an affect on terminal performance. Rounds like the 30-30 and 7.62x39 simply don't have the velocity to reliably cause this. All that matters is bullet expansion and penetration. The 30-30 will outperform the 7.62x39 all day long in regards to bullet expansion and penetration at appropriate ranges for both cartridges. the 7.62x39 uses bullets with a sectional density that is trumped by handgun cartridges for crying out loud. IMO, 30-30 is the absolute minimum in a 30 caliber cartridge for black bear and I simply don't think the 7.62x39 is the equal of the 30-30.
