Dad's old colt

I have a colt peace maker that my dad gave me many years ago. my dad has passed and it brings back alot of love and good times. my question is about the ser. # it has two one is1026 and the other is 1226 he told me when they went in for repair if parts were replaced they used the closest ser.# to the orig. one can anyone help me with this? It is in pretty good shape.

Both date to 1875. It still has value but not as much as it would as an all matching numbers gun.

If a US Army issue, they sent all they could round up back to Colt or to Springfield Armory and rebuilt them in the 1890s. They were going to DA .38s for first line issue and were just keeping the SA .45s for reserve and second-line outfits. They shortened the barrels to 5.5" after which the guns were were known as Artillery Colts. There was NO effort made to keep serial numbered parts together and it is just chance yours is as close as that. The number on the receiver just ahead of the trigger guard plate is what counts.

The Army was sure glad to have them to pass out when the Moros were not much impressed with .38s.

thanks it is marked us on it and the number in front of trigger guard is 1026. was this a second lot gun? and what kind of price on it? p.s. it will never be sold in my lifetime!!!

The value is based on condition and provenance. You need to give us some pics, any 1st gen SAA has the potential of being extremely valuable
