Primers at the gunshow
Hey all I am new here but not new to reloading anyway you should have seen he prices of guns and stuff at the gunshow in Syracuse, NY. Primers were $50 a 1000 and madnum primers were $75 a 1000. I ask the dealer why they were so expensive and he said thats the price because of how hard they are to get and Isaid well you have 20000 primers and I can still get them for less than that online matter of fact I have some backordered for 22.50 a 1000! He said well then wait for them I am here to make money not sympathy points! How does that catch you all our brothren gun people are crooks also?

He's absolutely right, it's called free market capitalism, supply and demand.....something not taught in schools today. People who don't like the higher prices are so quick to embrace socialism for a solution to the problem. You want the government to take primers from the "rich" and re-distribute them like they intend to do with peoples money?
Suck it up, learn to live with the shortages....it will pass. Us old timers have seen this before, and it'll happen again. |

It is the rule of supply and demand. If he has what you need, he controls the price. You have only to choose how badly you need them.
CAVEAT EMPTOR as my dear departed grandpappy used to say, when he would loosely translate it as: “Never trust a naked used chariot salesman.”

Also, I know the subject of primer availability is overkilled in this forum as well as at any other gun website, but I just don't see the shortage that everyone else does. I live in northwest Iowa, and I can get 3-4000 of whatever size I want right now. Also, I have been to gun shops in southern Minnesota, South Dakota, as well as Wisconsin all in the past 2 months, and they all had stock and were charging in the $27.99 - 34.99 range. I think that the regional shortages a lot of people are experiencing are making the whole thing look a lot worse than it is. |

It sounds like you were an unreasonable shopper with delusional expectations. Dont go back there. You will be happier, the shop will be happier, and the people who choose to buy the primers he has in stock will be happier. The world will be a happier place if you stay out of it |

You are correct KV and the exact reason IMO the country is in the small boat it is in. You make a comment and then spout your reason to a reply and give up on the fact that you are wrong or did not think your response completely through and still this is ok in society today as your freedom to do that will be defended by the lower to middle class that defend the countries rights to do that.

Bottom line is you will always be able to find cheaper prices online. Online stores usually function solely as a middle man between the manufacturer and retail consumer. As such they have MUCH lower overhead than a physical store or gun show, their prices dont include shipping or other associated fees, and their inventory is usually non existent. By supporting such businesses you are saving perhaps a few dollars, but in the meantime you are succeeding only in damaging your local economy and pushing the local industry to more receptive markets. The dealer was not in the wrong for standing by his prices in these times. If he cannot sell them it's nobody's loss but his own. You, on the other hand, need to CTFO and get over yourself. Perhaps he simply couldnt match the prices, maybe he could and just didnt like you... either way, you're incessant whining will accomplish nothing. |

It's times like these that I am happy my dad has been reloading for years. He is in the habbit of going through at least 500 rounds every Friday night and has purchased a lot of stuff in quantity before the preverbial crap hit the fan. As of current, 35,000 primers in boxes as well as about 20,000 45ACP and .357 Mag already loaded should last a while but it would be nice to know where powder and new casings are for new reloads.

I went to a gunshow today, found one box of 1000 sp primers in the whole joint. I asked how much, he said $76.50. I told him he was nuts and walked away.
I'd rather shoot way less and let my stash last awhile until prices get reasonable than play this game. I think we all know these primers were bought for $25 bucks before this mess started, I for one am not going to contribute to this Greed. |

There is a "sticky" thread at the top of this forum that deals directly with this subject.
Is there some valid reason to not post your remarks there, instead of opening, yet another thread on the pricing and availability of reloading supplies? I don't think so. Closed. |
