Have you had a chance to do any more shooting/load development with your .300 WSM? I'd be interested in hearing about it.

more loads

Coydog, I've been messing around with some 4831 in the WSM. I just couldn't wait till Hodgdon got around to coming up with some data. I hear they will have some data in a couple weeks. I started with a maximum 30-06 load and sierra 168 matchkings. I also filled a case to the bottom of the neck with H 4831 SC and weighed it. 68.0 grains is what it held. I started at 62.0 went up to 66.0 and went up 2.0 grns. at a time loading 5 shells for each 2 grain step. At the range my pact registerd the first 62 gr. load at 2563 fps and then quit working. BUT This load went into .530 inch! The 66.0gr. load was mild but was over an inch.If the chrono works tommorrow I will have some more data. I loaded some Hornady 165 SST's with H4831SC. Will test those tomorrow.

On another note I recieved some info from the accurate powder co. I had e-mailed them when I was first trying to find data. They have some preliminary data using A2700 and A4350 They sent it in excel format and I can only view it in quick view. They were getting approximately what Winchester was getting with their data. Around 3000 with 180's, 3280 with 150's and 2822 with 200's I have some of their A4350 so I may try some with the SST's if the 4831 doesn't pan out.

Thanks, Snuffy. Looks like you're the resident pioneer with the .300 WSM. Look forward to hearing about your results.

H4831sc loads,165 SST

Coydog, I can list my last post as the best laid plans of mice and men. I decided to do some yard work and got so tired I didn't go shooting on saturday. Well it rained on sunday and monday we had a bad thunderstorm with damage to a lot of buildings and trees.

I did go today and tested the H4831 SC loads for the Hornady SST's. Bodacious to say the least. The pact chrono still refused to work so no velocity data . I started at 64.0 gr. H4831 and went up in 1.0gr. increments to end at 68.0.
64.0 .870
65.0 1.440
66.0 1.560
67.0 .600!
68.0 1.00

So it looks like the H4831 SC is a good powder to use for the 300 WSM. I would estimate the 67.0 load to be around 3000 fps., maybe a bit more. Wherever max is it should push them to 3150. I will let Hodgdon tell me where max is for h4831sc.

They're going to get their butts kicked over there this election. How come people can't spell and use words correctly?

600 yd trial

I loaded up a box of the 165 SST's with 67.0 gr H4831 sc and went to shoot a freestyle 600 yard fun shoot. Out of a possible 75 I shot a 61. Not bad for a magnum rifle. The conditions were hot sun, light & variable wind with tons of mirage.

I was surprised that the recoil didn't bother me. I atribute that to the past magnum recoil sheild. Shooting prone using a benchrest tripod for the forend and supporting the buttstock with my left hand. The shoot is purely a fun shoot, no money awards or trophies, and few rules.

I'm happy as a barrel full of puppies with this new rifle. It has surpassed my expectations and then some. I would heartily recomend it to anyone.

Snuffy: Looks like I'm going to have to start scheming to get another Browning. I already have A-Bolts in .375 H&H and a .223. The .300 WSM should split the difference between the two.

more info

Thought I'd update a bit.;

A call to pact produced some tips on what ailed the chrono. Seems you have to keep the screen wires seperated, not all twisted up like mine were, screens closer than the 15 ft. I was using, And protect the chrono box from muzzle blast. It worked fine the last time out!

I retested the 4831 loads that I posted on last time. Went out at an average of 2793 fps., much lower than I estimated. Oh well, it's still a good load.

This time out I tried some loads from the Accurate arms data. Using AA4350 and the 165 SST, I started at 64.0 gr. and ended up at 68.0 gr. WW nickle cases, win lrp accurate arms xmr 4350 powder. Seating depth 2.870, .025 off the lands, will feed thru the mag.
64.0 av 2873 3 shot group 1.485
65.0 2920 1.370
66.0 2986 1.605
67.0 3059 .610
68.0 3052 .580*
*The last vel. readings, the sun was getting toward late afternoon, so I suspect an error was caused by the angle of the sun. No pressure signs so I wasn't over max, actually looked like it would take more powder.

Turns out there was a reason I was tired after doing yard work. I had a plugged up artery in my heart. After catherization and placing a stent in the LAD artery to clear a 99% blockage I feel more like doing things now.

Hello Snuffy: Sorry to hear about the health problem, but I'm glad you're getting it taken care of. I appreciate the 300 WSM info. I also saw the Trailer Trash info over at the Campfire, and recognized you by the Silver Antler scope. There seems to be more interest in 300 WSM over there for some reason.

I'm going to get a new A-Bolt one of these days, but it's second on my list right now. Next gun purchase will be a Marlin 45/70 to carry while elk scouting this summer...the dern grizzly bears are everywhere. I figure some of those 530 grain Garrett Hammerheads just might do the trick.
