grandfather made a gun.

Ok for real my grandfather made a single shot 22 out of a revolver body and a piece rifle barrel. he used the original sights brass welded on. Its a open top revolver body from a 1899 safety police Hopkins and allen.....its a neat lil gun and im wondering if its even legal. Its been around for at least 80 years and im just nervous owning it although there gonna hafta pry it from my cold dead hands.....any ideas

There are 2 parts to this. It was legal for your grandpa to make and own.
Did you inherit the gun or did he give it to you. If he gave it to you it is totally correct for you to own.
If you inherited it I do not know the answer.

As long as the barrel is rifled, the gun is legal.

.

Under current Federal Law, it's legal to convert a handgun into a rifle, but once so converted, it's against the Law to reconvert it back into a handgun w/o a special BATF permit.

(I once did so, and got a BATF ruling/letter to that effect before starting the project)

It's against the Law to convert a rifle into a handgun.

Popo is right.

It started as a handgun and was converted into a 22 LR handgun. All is good.

It would be interesting to see a picture if it is legal.
If it does not have a buttstock, it is still a pistol no matter the barrel length. Legal
If it does have a buttstock, and the barrel is at least 16" long, it is a rifle. Legal.
If it does have a buttstock and the barrel is less than 16" long, it is a Short Barreled Rifle.
Not legal without license that Grandpa probably didn't have.

I know what a S&W Single Shot looks like, I was interested in Grandpa's approach and workmanship.
