Mauser 98 Receiver

I recently purchased a .243 rifle from my hunting buddy that was built by a gunsmith friend of his. The receiver appears to be Mauser 98. On the top of the receiver and between the year stamp 1920 and 1918 is a word that starts with AM and ends with the letter G. There were other letters but I couldn't make out what they are. There are other markings as well but I'm gonna have to get a magnifying glass to see what they are. One side of the receiver has the letters GEW 98. It also has a C 4440 on the receiver. I don't know anything about Mauser actions/receivers so anything you can tell me will be a big help. Thanks in advance

Could some of those faint letters be EWC?

Amberg, a city in Bavaria, had one of the major armories turning out Gewehr 1898 rifles for the German Empire prior to and during WW1.
