Rangefinder

What is a good 500 yard rangefinder. Had one for years and i dropped it. Was time for new one anyway. Give me some ideas.

I have a Nikon 600, which is a pretty good rangefinder, but the 600 (in my view) means that it'll read to 600 yards under ideal conditions. It'll occasionally read out to 500, which is enough for most folks, but I'd like more. I had a coyote in view the other evening, with him at a slow walk in an adjacent pasture of mine. It was at dusk, looking west, and I knew he was over 300 yards out, but could NOT get the Nikon to read him. Finally I got a range of 359. So next time I'll get one that reads to a max of at least 800. A Leica would be nice, but that's probably overkill for my needs.

The only rangefinder I have experience with is a Leupold RX-1000.

It's small, is a 4x scope, has crisp clear image, and it's supposed to range out to 1000 yards. I have no idea about the 1000 yard business, due to holding it steady enough to get the cross hairs on an object that far away is a challenge. The battery is a 3 volt lithium CR22.

I have used it for stationary man sized targets out to 360 yards at a 3-gun game. And interstate highway signs out to 653 yards. My wife uses it to view 223 rem bullet hits at 25 yards. If I had it to do all over again, I would get the same unit.

I have a Nikon Laser 800 that is several years old ... I know I had it already in 2004 ... but can't remember exactly when I got it. Anyway, this one has accurately ranged things at 950yds (agreed with nephews 1200 yd unit) ... It almost always gives a reading out to 700 and usually gives one at 800. I HIGHLY recommend it, but don't know if they are still the same or available.

I have a Leopold 1200 something or other. 8X, clear and sharp. I use in in leu of binoclars. I see no need to pack two simular items.

I've ranged to 900 plus, but thats iffy. Works great for normal hunting distances.

It also has an angle finder, You can set it for line of sight or let it comute the angles for you. Handy in the mountains.

I have a Leupold RX-I will do 500+ yards on large objects and 300 on man sized objects. I just got back from Wyoming, and while I've had it a few years, this was the first time I really got to test it at longer ranges.
