Gun Show in Virginia Beach

Not much of a show.

There were a lot of tables but about half of the tables had clothing, jewelry, knives and a bunch of stuff I had no interest in.

The gent from the Eastern Shore was there and brought the Luger we had been speaking about. I bought it for 600.00.

1916 9mm DWM.

Apart from the only average finish, the pistol has parts from two different pistols. One is SN 5563 and the other is 6540. The upper is 55xx and the lower in 65xx.

In addition you can see from the photo the left grip has a very small chip missing from it. I specifically wanted a shooting pistol and not a collectable.

I took along my Herbert Schmidt SAA clone. It is .357 and that is not a caliber I do a lot with. I liked the pistol and had a lot of fun restoring it, but it is the eighth SAA clone I own so I figured to trade it off.

Swapped it for a 92 F Beretta. Pistol has Pachmayr grip and a laser (which I won't keep.

Nice sights too.

I am trying to spruce the pistol up a bit.

It has no real collector value and so I don't mind doing some things to it which on a better specimen would be discouraged.

If you take a look at the first photo in the first post, you will notice a bit of paint on the thumb grip on the toggle at about the 11:00 or 12:00 o'clock position.

I used a scribe to carefully remove that paint. Then lightly brushed it with a brass bristle brush. As "Servpro" says, "Like it never happened."

Also, you will note in the photo of the bottom of the magazine, that the magazine plug is cracked. The crack is visible under what is left of the serial number. It was actually cracked so badly that it would have fallen into two pieces if removed. I used a bit of wood glue to repair the plug. The repair is not detectable.

Next project is to repair the left grip. The goal will be to make the repair in such a way that it is not noticable. I will take photos during the process and if it comes out right, I'll post them.

I'd love it if the finish were a little better but I would not pay to have it reblued and I plobly won't cold blue it.

According to some folks on line, in pistol that are handled, used, shot a lot.

he little brown "L" is a rough approximation of the original contour.

I am using a piece of walnut from an old shotgun stock.

To get past the part of the grip that is saturated with oil and dirt.

And cut and shaped the replacement piece.

Glued the piece on and let it dry

Not perfect but a little better.

Nice job and nice pistol. I have always wanted a Luger. I have a friend with a bunch of mint ones that I have tried to get him to sell me just one.

There is a LGS here in Norfolk and they have several collectable quality lugers. Starting price is 2000.00. Out of my league.

I wanted a shooter and so I was looking for a different category of pistol.

The repair job on the grip is not all that great. Still learning.

The Model 92 shoots exactly like my other 92. The Pahmayr grips help control a bit. I took the laser off of the pistol and have it for sale on the eVil bay. Works like a champ. I started it a 25.00 but no interest. I just lowered the price to 20.00.

Also shot the Luger. Very interesting pistol. I love the ergonomics. I see why Ruger captured the angle of the grip for some of their early semi autos.

Pistol shoots like a dream. Very smooth. Action cycled very confidently.

Sight picture isnt great for my eyes, but it hits what you point it at.

I love it.

Not a bad Luger for $600 if it shoots. You can do a lot to bring those grips back by washing them with Murphy's oil soap and a toothbrush, letting them dry thoroughly and them applying a light coating of boiled linseed oil, wiping dry with a clean cloth.
