Hodgdon's starting load for the XTP is 15 Gr., you can have a look at the load data on their website. They are using exactly the same components you have.

The Hodgdon data site is at:
http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp In order to get the full statistics on primers and barrel used, you need to e-mail the data to yourself, because it is not shown in the online data. You will see the e-mail buttopn on the upper right side. Good Shooting!!

Shoney - here is a trick that I learned when I wanted to print one out that I saw while at work. If you click the print button, it will show you the primer type, barrel length etc. This is how I found out they are using the same primers as the OP. That recipe is using a 10" barrel.

My suggestion is the ABC's of handloading or the Lee book--Modern Reloading.

Starting out with 296 is not starting out. It's designed for top loadings. If you want a milder load to start, try a faster powder, like Unique.

Just loaded some Hornady 158 gr. XTP's as a matter of fact! But not using your components.
My recipe was as follows: 158 gr. XTP Accurate #9 powder at 14.5 grains Min. OAL 1.580 but mine were 1.585 CCI 550 primer

Winchester 296 and Hodgon 110 which is the same powder are designed for max loads. It is recommended to not go more than 3% less than the max load by the manufacturers.

W-296 Primer selection
Are mag primers needed for Winchester 296?
Have your musket clean as a whistle, hatchet scoured, sixty rounds powder and ball, and be ready to march at a minute's warning. |

Yes. I've heard of people getting away with using standard primers but why risk it?
