Help finding AR10-A2 compatible magazine

Hi folks,
I did a search but can't find the answer to my question.

I have an Armalite AR10 A2 that I purchased 15 or 20 years ago and only have the 2 ten round magazines that it came with.

I'd like to purchase a couple 20 or 25 round mags but am a bit confused on what will work with my rifle.

I called up Armalite this evening and they are out of the AR10 A2 mags and said the AR10 B will not work.

The lady on the phone checked with someone and said any AR10 A magazine would work or an SR25 mag would work as well. I'm not at all familiar with an SR25.

I'd hate to order the wrong item and have to return it so I was wondering if someone knew for sure which mag and where to purchase them.

Thanks,

That long ago does your mag have spring loaded plunger at the back on top? If so the current modified M 14 mag is the correct one and pretty scarce. You have to be on the look out for when they are back in stock.
The recent A model will use a few different mags.
Magpul makes mags that will fit I think.
There is also a transparent mag that will fit, can't remember the name of the maker.

I modified some M-14 mags years ago for someone else who has an AR-10 T

That's what Armalite did.. As I recall,in fuzzy fashion, the mag catch lug gets milled off the rear of the mag a new mag catch slot gets milled, the lips get trimmed back a bit to match your originals, and a new Armalite follower and spring get fitted. I don't recall exactly, but the bolt clearance on the rear of the mag may need a little cut.
Its been more than 10 years ago.

A Springfield M1A mag is essentially an M-14 mag. I have seen CheckMate versions for sale recently.
UPDATE: Apparently the older AR-10's that use a modified M-14 mag are AR-10 B
If you have an AR-10 A,(if I have it right!) Armalite came over to the SR-25 and DPMS "standard". You should be good with any mag that fits those, including Magpul.

I suspect the military designation of M-110 was incentive for Armalite to supply a magazine compatible rifle.

Verify this before you spend money.

I think Armalites the AR10 A takes Magpul PMags. PMags are SR25 mags if I'm not mistaken. Maybe this video helps:

Thank you for the help!!

The youtube video was definitely helpful. It would seem that my Ar10-A2 takes the "standard" universal mags.. Whew! Dodged a bullet on that one! I hate crap that is proprietary and specialized.

I ordered a couple of these:
https://www.tombstonetactical.com/ca...-rounds-black/

If they work out, I'll purchase another half dozen of them.. $16 isn't such a bad price. I might even spring for the 25 round version..

Now where's a good place to get a free floating front hand guard with all the rails for mounting stuff? Mine has the old M16 style "cone" shaped plastic thing.

The dang gun is a tack driver out to 200 yards with the 20 inch barrel and all, but it looks like it came from the Vietnam war with the old fashioned butt stock and hand guard. Time to update it.

You might want to start a new thread on the forend.

You might wade through some more youtube.

The Armalite barrel nut is not compatable with "everyone else"

Its the barrel nut that the forend attaches to.

For most of the quad rail forends, you have to use the forend's barrelnut. That is how they do a robust job of mounting the forend.

Before you procede, consider your front sight/gas block. If its fixed, held on by two cross drilled taper pins....its kind of an issue.

You might check into an upper receiver and barrel. Keep the original"classic" top end intact.
I know I am impressed by just how accurate an AR-10 with a free float quad rail and a Kreiger barrel can be. Well under MOA

If you have a 15 or 20 year old AR10A2,only B type mags will fit it.The A type only came out a few years ago.Last time I checked,Armalite had 20 round B mags in stock.Sorry, the lady on the phone told you wrong.Good news is,the B type mags are beautiful steel mags, that might last forever.

I'm going to be pretty upset if what you say is true and she told me the wrong type of magazine and if they don't make it right for me, I'm going to go on an internet campaign and blast Armalite and do as much social damage as possible.

This is bull crap. My gun says AR10 A2 right on the side of it and I told them it was 15 to 20 years old.

What's really disappointing is that my mag does look more like a B series than the A series and yet my freaking gun says AR10 A2 right on the damn side of it.

What kind of messed up company creates that kind of stupid confusion? I don't care how well this weapon shoots, if you can't get parts for it or you have to play games to get the correct parts, its not worth owning, and certainly not worth trusting your life to it.

The mags they told me to order better be the correct ones or I'm going to be on every youtube channel and social site I can find and let everyone know to never buy a weapon from this company.

Unfortunately for me, after reading Wayne's post, I'm thinking he might be correct and I ordered the wrong mags... won't know for sure until I stick them in though...

Well, after watching that video again and looking closer at some of the details, I've come to realize that my weapon, which is clearly stamped AR10 A2, is actually a freaking B.

WHAT THE FREAKING HECK IS WRONG WITH THIS COMPANY?

Before you blow a gasket and vapor-lock on us here, do you have any idea about the history behind the Armalite AR-10 series of rifles? Keep in mind that Knights Armament and Armalite were the first to bring out the AR-10 platform as we know it today. Knights went with the design that would become standard by designing their rifle around the original Armalite AR-10 rifle designed in the 50's and 60's. The waffle mags those rifles used were not always easy to come by. Armalite brought their rifles to market shortly afterwards during the 1994 assault weapons ban. Not sure if you were around for those days but newly manufactured magazines were banned from civilian sales and non-neutered magazines were generally VERY expensive. I remember Glock 21 mags with a going rate of $125 EACH! They needed a magazine that was already in circulation and lower priced. M-14 surplus mags in those days were still quite affordable and the modifications to those mags were able to work in the AR-10 rifles and still a far cry cheaper and more durable than Stoner/Armalite AR-10 waffle mags. Many owners that already owned an M1A and had a supply of magazines for it could convert them to run in the Armalite AR-10 as well. This is why what you refer to as a propriety magazine was a workable solution to a very dark time in our history. Had you lived through those days, you'd understand why things are the way they are. It wasn't until after 2004 when we seen the sun again that makers like DPMS began to market rifles designed to take the old Stoner pattern magazines that became popular today.
As far as the A/B series confusion goes, are you aware that Armalite at one time marketed the AR-10B rifle? It was built on the same modified M-14 magazine platform of the day but with brown plastic furniture and the charging handle located inside the carrying handle in a similar fashion to the original Stoner/Armalite AR-10 rifles. Now while I agree that today, the original M-14 style magazine rifles should have been designated as an "A" style lower receiver and the newer AR-10s using the DMPS/PMag style magazines that came along much, much later be designated as a "B" style power receiver, I'm sure you can see where that would cause confusion with the old AR-10B rifles.
Yes, it does sound like they screwed up in telling you which rifle would work with which kind of magazine. However, if I were you, I'd just return them and watch for when they make another batch of B-series magazines then stock up on them then. I've got 3 B-series AR-10s and while they can't use the latest and greatest PMags and other more standardized DPMS pattern magazines, the AR-10 B series magazines are as bomb-proof as my M-14 mags and should give decades of decent service.

I have 2 "B" models, love'em...!!

And yes you have a B model. Armalite just started making the A model a few years ago. But don't worry, the B's are BETTER..
