looking for a 300 win mag load

Any suggestions for a 300 win mag load in a 26" sendero? I have been using H1000 behind a 190gn Sierra match. I'd like to run the same bullet (or something around the same weight) but am open to a powder change if anyone has a recipe they would like to share. I enjoy the hit & miss challange of working up the load, but its a bit expensive just doing the blind test of buying a powder & trying it. I have not been able to bring it below 2 1/2" at 300yd. Any input appriciated.

2 1/2" at 300 yards is very respectable for a "big Boomer" like the 300WM.

Mine is loaded strickly for hunting elk, and for that I use the 200 gr. Nosler Partition just as hot as the cases will allow with IMR 4831.

Maybe not the optimum load, but MY gun likes it and will keep a 5 shot group inside 1 1/2" at 100 yards, plenty good enough for elk hunting.

OH...the elk definitely don't like the 200 grain nosler...LOL

H4831-SC is almost ideal for 300WM. VV-N560 is good too, but the Hodgdon powder will be more temp-stable.

Also look at the 210gr Berger VLD bullet. It has a much higher B.C. than the 190SMK (0.64 vs. 0.53 for the SMK). You'll sacrifice a little muzzle velocity, but will get a lot less wind drift.

For my 300 Win Mag I like Retubmo powder and Speer 200 grain spitzers, Nosler 220 grain semi-spitzers (a truly remarkable bullet design), and Sierra 220 grain round nose. The round nose bullets are surprizingly accurate. Not too impressive on the ballistic chart but very accurate. I've also have good luck with Nosler 180 grain solid base boat tail bullets (I buy them whenever I find them). Hornady bullets didn't do it for me with the 300. Accuracy just wasn't there.

Other powders I tried (including H-1000) were'nt as good as Retumbo in the accuracy department and I have gone with Retumbo exclusively for both my 300 WM and my 7mm RM.

I have a Sauer 202 and interchange barrels between 300 win mag and 7mm rem mag. The gun is wonderfully accurate for a light weight sporter. I shoot bottle caps at 200 yards and hit them on a very consistent basis. The ones with clean holes (metal all around the bullet hole) make super conversation pieces. Lots of people I know put them on their key rings.

Flash, Funny you should mention the caps, I have a key ring full of dimes. However, they are from 22-250 @ 150 yds. Pennies would be cheaper I guess, But dimes are smaller.

How do you find them after you shot them

Say is it safe to say that any .30 cal bullet would work for a .300 winmag? I am wondering if you can load it light and the bullets stay together. Just curious on the versatility of this reach out and touch something caliber.

Sarg, I usually use a forsner bit to drill a hole about 3/8 in deep in a 2x4 (hole bout the size of a dime) and shoot. The dimes are usually still in the wood or sittin in the dirt just behind.
.308 is .308, I load light and I load em HOT. I can get a light 308 velocity and I can run in excess of 3000 fps. Just start easy and watch cases for sign.~z

I used to load the Sierra 220gr BTHP over some IMR 7828 per the Sierra manual. Not exactly pleasant to shoot, but it did very well in wind and I got 1.5 inch groups out of an unmodified Ruger #1.

The Hornady 150gr SST's seem to do just fine at slightly elevated velocities ... they average about 3285fps out of mine.

I use a surplus powder (WC852) from GIBrass.com that is supposedly an "IMR4381 equivalent." At 80gr a pop, this caliber can really go through the powder!

Is it possible to go lighter than the 150's? I am curious so I can shoot lighter loads for more varmit type hunting when Elk or mule deer season is not around. I have found 125s but have been told that with such a large case you can have a problem of case explosion because the powder is not burning off correctly.

Well, I have a difficult time believing that since Remington used to market 30-06 accelerators which were 55gr .223 bullets with a sabot to get them to 30 caliber. I know hornady makes a 110 gr V-max bullet in .308, and I'd bet that it would really sizzle out of a 300WM ... I'm sure the Hornady manual will have loads for them, but I don't have mine with me.

You can also get the afrementioned sabots and make your own 55gr loads ... I have some of the materials but have never put them together on the 300 platform. It just so happens that Accurate has a load for these on their website:

That sounds what I am looking for. I am a little hesitant to try this in a new rifle but am willing to experiment. That does sound like something to try for some distant varmit shooting.

Sarg, when and where? I'm just outside of Amarillo and always looking for someone to shoot with/ learn from. Also if varmits are your bag, we have PLENTY of prairie dogs and a few coyotes too.
