S&W 686 Rear Sight Blade Replacement
I want to replace the adjustable all-black rear sight blade on my S&W 686 with a white-outline blade. This doesn't look difficult if a person has the correct tool for the job. What is the correct tool to release the retaining (is it a ring or screw?) on the left-side of this sight?

You'll need a S&W rear sight KIT. The rear sight screw MUST BE BROKEN to remove it. It's designed with a weakened section that will shear when the screw is turned all the way counter-clockwise, and then twisted. Use a good, fitted screwdriver for this. The kit will have a sight blade, a new screw, and (I think) a new nut.
To replace the unit, you re-assemble the parts then use a large center punch with a rounded point to re-stake the nut. For full details, get Jerry Kunhausen's S&W gunsmithing book. |

Where's the kit?
May we lowly civilians buy this kit? I have a rear sight which is a bit floppy. Reduces confidence on those 100-yard shots.

You certainly may. Brownell's at:
www.brownells.com Sell kits, as does Gun Parts Corp at: www.e-gunparts.com If you own a Smith & Wesson, I strongly recommend the Jerry Kunhausen book. |
