Rear sight on N frame S & W
I'm looking to put a rear sight back on my 657 Classic hunter.
I bought this revolver some 10 plus years ago and it already had a scope on it. I'd like some idea how to determine the correct base for the rear sight before I order or buy one. I understand the different blade configurations and all it's just the base that I'm not sure on. Thanks E.

S&W only had one size of base, and used it on all revolvers.
There's the Old Style and the New Style. The Old Style had a tiny screw near the front of the leaf to hold it on the frame The New Style has a larger screw. Best option: Just call S&W and give them the model and "dash" number stamped on the frame just below the barrel, where the cylinder yoke seats. They'll know just what you need. Give them the barrel length, and they'll also know exactly which blade kit to include. |

The sight should just slide in and be screwed down UNLESS the person who installed the scope mount messed up the top strap, something that was sometimes done.
