My Two Cents.
In a 20 Cal I recommend a 204.
In a 224 Cal I would go with a 223.
My reasoning is brass availability. Fireball brass can be hard to get and expensive. I have owned Fireballs. Less velocity than a 223 and the same noise level. On the other hand 223 brass is dirt cheap and everywhere.
The 204 is a lot more common and available (Under normal conditions) than the smaller specialty case. The 204 has more powder space than is needed in a barrel 16" and under.
My recommendation would be to go with a 223. Lots of bullets available to reload with. I set mine up to shoot 60 grain V-Max bullets (1-10 Twist Barrel). The 223 is pretty hard to beat for an all around centerfire 224 in a Contender or Encore with a 14" - 16" barrel.

The .221 Fireball was designed to be used from 10" barrels. It, literally, holds all the powder you can burn in a 10" barrel. And a 10" barrel is what Remington made in the XP-100 pistol.

I have one, and a .222 Rem 10" for my Contender. The .222 holds a few more gr of powder, doesn't go any faster.

Now, move out to 14" or more, and the .222 and .223 get a benefit, being able to use more of the powder they hold in the longer barrel length, and so are faster than the .221 from longer barrels.

As far as the brass goes, yes .223 brass is everywhere, and you can make .221 FROM it. Though that's not an issue for me, I have a couple hundred factory Fireball cases and that's a long time supply for me.

221 fireball

Great round, having owned one in xp-100. Great when fox hunting and wading thru knee deep snow drifts. Muzzel blast is fierce with ten inch barrel, round is overall pretty accurate. 221 factory ammo is pretty hard to find. Nosler now making a single shot pistol, its pricey but looks to worth the bucks. 22, 6mm, calibers. many options on barrel length. They make thier own propritery ammo for this pistol. 12-34hom
