Shot a friends 460 magnum today. Wow!!!!! However . . . .

I used to think it would be fun to own one.

Now I think it would be fun to shoot one that belonged to a friend.

I bought a Taurus Raging Bull .454 about 10 years ago and love it!!

VERY Accurate.

Bought a S&W Performance Center 460 and could not find ammo that it would shoot accurately,,,,,sold it.

The .454 is all you need.

Need? Need? Really? More like a 'want' I would say . Ha! 99% of folks don't need a .454 or a .460 or a .500.... When a .45 Colt or .44 Mag would do just fine in the big bores.... Seems to me the medium bore .357/.38 is the most popular 'revolver' caliber behind the lowly small bore .22. And most people just bring the heavies to the range to shoot paper ...not to shoot Cape Buffalo.... So... need?, naw ... want!

Now I think it would be fun to shoot one that belonged to a friend.

A few years ago a guy at the range insisted that I try his new S&W .500.

So I did. One shot was enough for me. I don't consider self-punishment to be fun. My wrist hurt for a week afterward.

a friend of mine got the 460, let me shoot it, started off with 45 colt (felt like shooting 38's) then on to the 454 (felt like shooting 44 mag) then onto the 460 shot 3 rounds and gave it back, to much for me....

460's are just one of those guns that doesn't serve much of a practical purpose (excluding personal protection up in Alaska), but for the recreational enthusist the 460 puts a huge ear to ear grin when pulling the trigger!

I’ve had most of the super pistols starting with Automag and ending with 445 Super mag DW. I have shot most of the newer ones too. If it can’t be dealt with with 44 mag I believe I’ll leave it alone. Most guys with Super Pistols are always looking for light loads for them anyway. Even 44mg isn’t necessary for most shooting. I’ve got several of each magnum and find myself shooting 45Colt, 44sp & 38sp. 90%of time I’m shooting paper and it doesn’t charge when wounded.

I have a 44 mag and a 454 Casull. I have no desire for a 460. The Casull is scoped and gives me more range than the 44 mag. Sometimes I carry both when I am handgun hunting. I understand the reasoning behind the cartridge, but I haven't found a use for it.

To the OP....what grain bullet did you shoot? And are you going to shoot it again in the near future?

It depends on the model and the load. I'm used to the original XVR with 8.38" barrel. Between the weight, muzzle break, and beautifully comfortable grips; it really does help to mitigate recoil. To get a good idea, try .460 out of an XVR back to back with .454 out of a Redhawk.

The 200-grain FTX loaded from Hornady seems "just right" for .460 S&W. Recoil is reasonable and the power level is still ludicrous. We're at the top of the curve for handguns here. I feel more recoil from heavier loads but I'm not sure what I gain from that transaction. This seems like the sweet spot for a high-velocity big-bore. If throwing big mass downrange is the goal, why not just go all in with a .500?

So was the Trapdoor Springfield Carbine I had. They don't use 70 grains of BP. snicker.
A .460 would depend a great deal of what firearm it came out of and the load. If nothing else you can say you've shot one. Kind of like me and that DE.

Actually quite pleasant to shoot but you need hands like an orangutan to hold it properly.

I manage it well enough, and wear a size 8.5-9 glove, though it is at the upper end of what I can grip and be happy with. I have other magnum semi autos with smaller, more easily managed grips. Its really amazing the difference a 1/4" in the right spot makes.

I never bothered with the .454, or anything bigger in a repeating handgun. .44 Mag, .44AMP,, .45 Win Mag and .45 Colt (in Rugers) was always enough for what I did, and if I needed or wanted more then the Contender (in rifle calibers) was used, or an actual rifle.

I considered getting a .500 S&W but only shooting cast bullet out of it. After handling one, the thing is a beast and I'd just as soon have another .44 mag.

45 Colt in a Redhawk or Blackhawk frame can do 99% of what you need.

I had a 460 the recoil was not that bad. I am petty sure my m29 kicks harder with heavy loads. I couldn't stand the muzzle blast. It would blow stuff off of the shooting bench. Any body on adjoining benches would leave. The blast from the cly gap would destroy rests fairly quick. I ended up using very hot 45 colt loads when hunting with it. But then why do I need a huge revolver when just using 45 colt loads.

I enjoy the thrill of sending my 200gr handloads downrange at nearly 2,100fps (so far). I am fairly recoil tolerant, but I didn't like the muzzle blast from the 460V comp, so I installed a blank and it's just awesome. Maybe one day I'll get to hunt with it using 300gr PC hardcast. Hot loads in my M629 seems like a 9mm when I shoot it after the 460!

"...upper end of what I can grip..." Shot a DE at Second Chance years ago when DE's were new that Cylinder and Slide had 'reduced' in size. My finger came to the side of the trigger but nowhere near where it needed to be. I had to shoot the thing with my hand literally sideways. I still laugh about it.

The .460 is a Casull on steriods. Very likely developed so Smith could say they make the biggest and baddest cartridge. Just like they had Dirty Harry say the .44 Mag was the most powerful handgun in the world.

The .454 is all you need.

The difference between .454 and .460 is a cat whisker. Basically the .460 is S&W proprietary version of a "Extra Hot" .45 Colt. Basically all the .454 is. Biggest difference is platform. My P.C. .460 is scary accurate and a hoot to shoot compared to the .454 Ruger I had. Both were a handloaders caliber and I never messed much with factory ammo.

My .460 is my primary deer hunting weapon and basically the whole idea behind the caliber. For that purpose and within those parameters, it works very well.

Since the grips of the X-Frame are smaller than those on a N-Frame and actually the same size as a L-Frame, I have a hard time getting this(other than the pleasant to shoot). The heft of the gun makes it so one needs more wrist strength to hold it, but for my purpose, the gun is basically always shot off some kind of rest, either in the field or at the range.

In my youth, loaded all my 357, 41, and 44Mags to the limit. After injuring my neck, I became more manure about recoil. I read an article by Brain Pearce in Handloader 268 on the 45 Colt. I got a 5.5" Bisley SS and got some of his recommended 280gr RCBS SAA bullets. I loaded a "Tier2" 10gr of Unique and started testing on some mud banks of a lake behind the house. Load chrono'd 1057, shot 1.5" at 25 yards, and was very comfortable to shoot. I w astonished to find that the penetration was 4-5 FEET!! My son later shot a 150# hog at 25 yards. Entrance below the eye socket, exit in the right ham with a fist sized hole. Amen.

I actually have shot an 8 inch something S&W 460 and a .30-30 TC Contender and by far the worst handgun I've ever shot pain-wise was the little .357 magnum Ruger LCR with factory (not hot loaded) 158 grain .357 magnum rounds.

That's very accurate and truthful. I bought a 500 S&W BFR and the very first shot was so "in your face" that I laughed in somewhat of a stunned state. That being said, it's not got a lot of real practical value and I didn't keep it around for long.
