The snow just offers better visibility day or night. Everything here is coyote color right now. My favorite time to hunt coyotes is at night, snow on the ground and a bright moon (no spotlight).

How about a 17HMR? Anyone use one for coyotes?I'm going to Az in march to see my father inlaw and to take care of the coyotes eating his chickens.Or should i just take the AR15?

My AR is one of my best coyote guns, I have two 17's but I never use them on yotes. Since you have the .223 then there isn't any reason to go with the 17HMR. This is just my opinion of course.

I appreciate it guys, I just assumed that since you can't hunt deer with a rifle you can't hunt coyotes with a rifle (weird Indiana laws), my buddy is also misinformed, but this is great news, now I can actually use my AR-15 for something besides tearing up targets.

One other question, I didn't see anything on magazine capacities, can I hunt them with a 20 or 30 rounder?

Ive killed nearly a 100 coyotes in my time hunting them. Nearly all with my Marlin .22 25n with a simmon 3-9x40 scope. I now shoot a Marlin 917V in .17HMR. I must tell you this little gun is a great coyote killer. My last three kills were last weekend and two of them were at about 150-170 yrds. Could have been luck, but it happened twice. The gun is a great coyote slayer, if in the right hands. I guess maybe im fortunate I have been shooting rifles my entire life, which may aid my coyote killing experience.

I have to say i love my savage 17HMR its extremely accurate and fun to shoot, but i love My AR too.I'm so torn! I know i could get all head shots with the 17 @ 150 yards or less. But anything past that i would have to go with the AR.

22 for coyote?

I don't know how big your coyotes run but I can't recommend a 22 for coyote. I have taken them with a 22 mag. My night time weapon is a 22mag over a 20 ga. Again, in the right hands with a well placed shot it will work. I prefer my 223. Deadly out to 300. Farther than I can see them up here. The yotes are very tough. I don't leave cripples. One Shot One Kill.

guns for coyotes

Michigan has some similarly odd gun regs.
In the areas where you cannot use a Rifle for deer, but only a shotgun, Muzzle loader, or straight walled cartridge handgun (above 35 cal) , you CAN use any rifle for coyotes.

Go figure.

Used 22LR on feral dogs and any shot over 50 yards would not put them down. A 223 with 50-55gr bullets was perfect to 300 yards and no ricochets.

A while back I found some 22lr bullets (loaded ammo) that were 55gr. I don't see why that wouldn't drop a coyote in it's tracks.

I may not have the experence that others do in this thread, however I have just shot my 50th coyote a week ago. I have shot them with 22lr to 416 Taylor. Many I shot with a 222 Rem and 223 Rem. I can tell you one thing for certain they are tougher than most give them credit for. I found both I shot with a 22lr died slowly and inhumanely. I also found that I would loose 1 in 7 with a 222 or 223. So my opinion based on my limited experence is unless required to do so with a 22, go with something heavier.

I have a Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag set up for coyotes. I am comfortable shooting them out to about 55-60 yards with my setup. I however hunt in the hardwoods and not out in the open fields and praires. Most of my shooting takes place inside of 40 yards and it is extremely deadly with the right load and choke setup. It may cost you some money in trial and error with testing chokes and loads, but once you find the one that works best out of your shotgun. You will be pleased with the results!

I would not use the .22 for anything over 100 yards. Its all about shot placement. .22's move too slow. I use a .17hmr.

i wouldn't use a 22 you will lose alot of coyotes 22 mag at the least and close range only but they are tough and smart. I would recommend a 243 but 223 and 22-250 work pretty good too.

I'm almost certain TCman's question was answered back in 2006 since he has not responded to this thread since FEBRUARY 2006!!
