Ak rifle to pistol?

I've got a JMAC customs carbine conversion on my Arsenal Ak....I'd like to throw a brace on it and chop the barrel down under 16 inches but I was told I couldn't do that if it's a SBR the only way or is there a way to register it as a pistol? .

If it starts as a rifle, it will always be a rifle.

If it starts as a handgun, it can go back and forth.

SBR it, or start with an actual pistol.
Don't even try it. It's even worse than the internet would lead you to believe.
