Dirty first loads

Hello again! Fired my first 100 rounds of .38 spec. after test firing a few. And i noticed my m-60 S&W was pretty dirty! (especially around the cylinder) spent cases are also somewhat blackened. i used 4 grains of win231, remington primers, and a 158 gr. round nose lead bullet. is this normal? they all seemed to shoot ok. i've shot this gun a few times, but never this many rounds of my reloads. thanks in advance for your thoughts!

clone?

I, too, shot some 38 Special 158g LRN / 4.0g W231 yesterday (ignited by Federal 200 SPM primers).

Smokey but accurate.

What happens is insufficient pressure to push the case walls fully against the chamber walls; you get sooted cases from the blow-back.

Notice I used SPM primers?

W231 is like that I use 3.7 with that bullet but after 50 rounds have a Black thumb. But my cases don't seem to burn that bad.

4 grains of 231 is a starting load in my lee manual , A little warmer load will raise the pressure and get more case exspansion and seal the chamber better , This should reduce the blackening . I did this for 45 colt .
As always refer to your loading manual before you change your load

Experienced the same with my starting load of AA#5

I loaded behind a 158 gr LSWC. I thought I was shooting black powder!
They were accurate, and out of my 4" 686, I felt like Jerry Miculek on the steel targets! Yeah, I ended up with a black cylinder, black left hand from the speed reloads, but a huge grin at the end of the day! If I had a M28, It'd probably feel like I was shooting a .22!
