Help for geezers

I've been experimenting with different
sights on my carry/IDPA guns.

Over a period of many months, I've tried
plain black, white dot, flourescent paint,
tritium. Each had its advantages; each
had its shortcomings for my fifty-three
year old eyes.

The problem I was having was with fast
front sight acquisition.

In December,a competetive shooter suggested
a fiber-optic front sight.

I've been using one on my gov model for
two IDPA matches now, and it works!

I've coupled the red fiber-optic front with
a Wilson adjustable (black) rear. The
combination is far superior to anything
else I've tried. At last weekend's match
several of the younger shooters wanted to
see what I was using. Apparently they had
spotted that big red "glow" from behind
the firing line.
Just wanted to share my experience with
the rest of you geezers who, like me, may
need a little edge as you age.

As another geezer, with 57 year old eyes, I'd appreciate some possible purchase referrences. I've not heard of fiber optic front sights.

I don't think I'm a geezer yet, more like a "pre-geezer." I had a Hi-Viz Brand fiber optic front sight on my Kimber, and it was the fastest-to-find sight I have ever seen. I swear it seems like it jumps up at your eyes! I used the green indoors, red tube outdoors, takes about 20 seconds to switch tubes. If you can't come up with something from a web search on the company or an ad in one of the gun mags, you can E-mail Pam Gunter at [email protected]. She is a company rep of some sort I exchanged info with, and can tell you where to buy. Cost will be about 20 bucks.

They are available from:

Caspian, EGW,North Pass,RPM,
Tactical Conversions,and Prosight.

There are probably others. These are
sources I've heard of.

I suspect if you log on to Brownells
you'll find some the above sights.

Fiber optic sights are not like tritium.
They won't help any more or less than
other non-tritium sights in low light.
I am convinced that they help me
tremendously in normal lighting conditions.

They really draw your eye to that front
sight. I'm told they are popular in
competative shooting circles.

My problem has been acquiring the front
sight quickly. Because until I accomplished
that, I couldn't get my "sight picture".
Now that problem has been solved.
Both my speed and accuracy have improved
in the two matches I've shot using fiber
optic front sights.
