Too hot to take home

This, courtesy of Instapundit and Knox News. It seems that Oak Ridge National Labs allows deer hunting, but they check the deer before the hunter can leave with them.

Too much radioactive contamination? I wonder if they glowed in the dark?

Kudos to Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the hunting.

In Germany an Poland especially they also check for radioactive pigs . This from Chernobyl. Pigs eat some things like mushrooms and roots that concentrate radiation.

Dad used to work in the industry some of the best hunting was the property just behind the lab. No 3 horns but some nice bucks. Course it was closed to everyone else except employees

Mmmmmm..... Radiation......

I got a buddy who used to work on one of the nuclear subs. He said they were all require to wear a radiation monitor on their uniforms. Who were the guys that got the most radiation? the guys that resupplied the boat and had to go outside in the sun.

I'm pretty sure these things are safe enough (barring massive earthquake followed by a tsunami) that if people are getting more radiation from the sun that they are on the boat, I wouldn't have an issue eating a deer from outside a nuclear plant.

The same thing happens at the Savannah River Nuclear site. They have managed hunts with dogs for deer, hogs........

In fact we've a couple of friends who are "dog handlers" on a lot of the hunts. They say it's one heck of a thing with lots of hounds and lots of folks not familiar with one another.

And yes they do the radiation check................

IIRC one of the major contaminants in an area like Oak Ridge is Strontium-90, which tends to collect in bones. So ingestion is a concern, as alpha and beta emitters arent very dangerous unless inside of you. However even then it could be questionable that the amounts would be more than your normal exposure rates, but why chance it if you know the game comes from a contaminated area.

I don't glow or have super powers after spending a portion of my childhood in Oak Ridge, but it sure is a nice place.

The SRS hunt is pretty tightly regulated. They drop you off on a numbered stand and you are expected to stay where you are dropped off untill they pick you up. If you wander away from your stand, and get caught you will be escorted offsite. Standers are placed more than far enough apart to prevent any accidents. Success all depends on luck of the draw. Deer numbers are way down on the site but they still have some good hunts.
