I think you have plain old Clays. I couln't find any Clays Extra Clean on Hodgdon's website, so I went and looked at my Clays...it does say Extra Clean Shotgun-Handgun Powder on the label. Just to make sure, the code on the UPC scan bar is 39288 53121. If your's matches...you should have plain old regular Clays...NOT Clays Universal, which is a different powder.
The Hornady manual lists loads for 357 with lead bullets and Clays powder. |

*nod nod* i guess it's plain old clays then. regardless, i'd prefer to be extra descriptive when asking for help
anyways, what does it say the max load is for a 110gr JHP? |

Plain old CLAYS
This has been a peeve of mine for years.
I don't know what Hodgdon had in mind when they named two of their powders: CLAYS and UNIVERSAL CLAYS I believe they also have something called International CLAYS It caused me and apparently others no end of confusiohn till we learned to intrerpret the "code" Considering the danger if you confuse one with the other I can't believe that the same Layers that convinced them to "Wimp" down their published data, haven't got them to do something about this - there can't be THAT much in "Branding" I USE CLAYS quite extensively and have adopted the custom of calling it: "Plain old CLAYS" ( instead of "CLAYS) when posting. I think the forums would become safer if eveyone did.

Being one of the people that has made the mistake of using "straight" Clays with Universal Clays data, I sent an email to Hodgdon about this issue, never got a response. I was lucky enough to catch what I did before any rounds got fired, don't know how I missed my error before loading, but I always check everything over one more time after loading a batch and caught it there.
As far as straight Clays and 357 magnum, I wouldn't use that powder, it just isn't for magnum loads. Hodgdon does not list it for 357 in their 2004 annual, but does show it for 38 special, where it would probably work really well. Universal Clays has worked well for me in the past, Titegroup did okay, but I just love the muzzle flash from H110 and use it the most. |

Many of Alliant's pistol powders are called "(Color) Dot",and their rifle powders are "Reloader XX". Most of IMR's rifle powders are "IMR 4XXX". You have to read the details in this hobby.... Hodgdon named all three powders in that fashion, because they all use the same technological breakthrough to achieve their clean burning properties. |

that doesn't bode well for me then
...does anybody want to trade a 3/4 lbs jar of clays for a 3/4 lbs jar of hiskor 800x? i bought a jar of clays from the gunshop i go to here in phoenix (randall's, for any desert rats here) per one of the guys' reccomendations. i was hoping it'd load across the chart like hiskor 800x (my dad uses that stuff, so that was the first powder i tried) anyways, i like clays for my .45acp loads. it tightened the group down considerably, but hiskor loaded in my .45acp and my .357mag loads. any reccomendations for another powder that loads across the chart like that? |

Dot5ive, here's on-line loading data from several powder companies and other sources. Take a look and select a powder that'll give you what you want. There are a lot of powders that will do it. HS6 is one that should do a good job.
