If I had a better rest instead of rock solid Caldwell bags I could pull off one hole 5 shots. I started loading 20.8 of H335 with cci400 and 450 primers and the 450 shot tighter. I loaded all the way up to 22gr with both primers and 450 shot better so I scrapped the 400 primers and now I'm at 23.2gr of h335 with cci450 55gr v max. savage axis bull barrel at 100yards.

Would really like to get this thing over a chronograph and see what its pushing. Checked all brass and didn't see a single inkling of high pressure. the red dot is the exact size of a dime.

There's a standard warning to be inserted with hot load information. It's in this sticky. However, in your case, the Hornady maximum for the 55 grain V-max is far enough below the 25.3 grain Hodgdon maximum for the 55 grain Speer Soft Point, that it isn't likely to actually be a hot load, even with the magnum primer and the longer V-max bullet seating deeper into the case. Some of Hornady's loads are on the conservative side.

As you've discovered, the CCI magnum primers are formulated for the older ball powder formulations like H335, and do typically light them up better than their standard primer does.

Axis, you infer that your Caldwell bags are too firm. Try substituting cheap clay kitty litter. It does not compress tight like sand. It will give you firm support, but you won't get that bounce like you will from something solid.

The bags became wet therefore hard as a rock. last night I was using the cheap brown walmart rear bag and it was really sloppy. I had to hold it with my hand under my right arm to control it.

Isn't holding the rear bag and squeezing it to control elevation the standard Benchrest technique? Or, have things changed?

Axis223, do yourself a favor, get a good bunnyear rear bag they will last forever. Nice groups, midrange on listed powder ranges gives better accuracy most of the time.

years ago in a pinch I got Wal-Mart shooting bags that are filled with plastic beads. the bag ripped and I glued and taped it and used that instead of the hard Caldwell rear bag.

the old bag was losing its beads and sliding and sloping.
