super blackhawk

went out around the town today, stopped in a small gunstore and found a goody ive never seen before.

used, ruger super black hawk in 44 magnum. long barrel was nice but a tad heavy. the gun wasnt cleaned in a very long time so it might have fudged it up a bit but..

ive heard wonderful things on ruger lockup, on this one the cylinder would move back about 2 mm with the hammer all the way down. and it would rotate side to side about a quarter inch.

is that normal?

with the hammer all the way back, the rotational play was reduced by half. is that normal at all?

and for some reason the transfer bar was misshapen, the section that contacts the firing pin was bent wierd like someone tried some amateur gunsmithing.

but the wierdest thing was that it was the same size in frame and cylinder as a reproduction percussion revolver of a remington pattern. NOT a ROA sadly.

If you can get a good enough deal on it I'm sure ruger would fix it.

From your description of the symptoms, it spounds as if this gun has been badly abused. Its all correctable, if you get it so cheap you can throw a few dollars in to put it back in shape. If you can't do some of the work yourself, forget it. Minor problems are still expensive when you hire the work done.

I think the msrp on a new one is only like $729, so probably should actually cost a bit less. Paying $200 under msrp for something that needs a full rebuild seems like a lot.

Sounds like trouble.
Get a good one and spend the time and money shooting, instead of shipping it back and forth and cussing.

I can get a NEW one for that, maybe cheaper.

Edit: I just checked. I can pick up a new blued 5.5" for $539. If it was
in-stock, the 7.5" version would run $554.

I paid $350 for mine, with just a little holster wear on the barrel and ejector shroud. Although that was ~14 years ago, prices have remained pretty constant here, on the Super Blackhawks. The same thing probably wouldn't break $400 today.

For the condition you describe, I wouldn't pay more than $300 in today's market - and that would only happen if there was just something about THAT revolver that made me want it. Otherwise, I'd keep looking. Super Blackhawks aren't too difficult to come by (at least not in the places I have lived).

If, for some reason, you do decide to purchase it, Ruger should fix it. You just have to cover shipping (about $100-130 to ship it yourself; or less than $20 to have an FFL do it).

I recently discovered that my own SBH was worn out (

). I shipped it off to Ruger, to see if they'd fit a new cylinder and base pin, and fix the lockup issues. On Tuesday, they told me they replaced the barrel, cylinder, base pin, ejector shroud, hardware (all screws/pins), and did a full refinish/reblue ...at no cost to me.

Okay, a little cost - I paid $12 for flat-rate shipping through an FFL.

I can't wait to get it back.

The used SBH that have been sold in LGS here have gone for $499 and are in NRA Good to Excellent. Sounds like a POC there.

perhaps online gun buying is efficient and enjoyable when your local gun dealer will actually let you have it sent to them. so when they wont, your stuck buying it from them at the price listed on the ruger website.
