some good information here . again i am trying to balence over penetration with getting another shell in the tube . since there is still alomost room for a 2 2-3/4 shell . I think I'll buy a box and just make the 2-1/2 round the first shot , after that business as usual . 5 rounds of #4buck .

#6 shot for home defense ?

Another vote for 3 or 4 buck. I have a 12 gauge and live in a condo. Four buck is what I keep in the tube.
The smallest I would be comfortable with would be BB or T shot, but neither would be first choice. Good luck!

Does anyone know of a 2 1/2" buckshot
OP are you measuring the loaded shell? because that would measure 2-1/2". Shell length is the FIRED length, so your normal loads that you are calling 2-1/2 are more likely to be the normal 2-3/4" ammo everyone is talking about.

If you can't find buck, get some goose loads - at HD distance they WILL penetrate
