Semi-Auto or Pump

I'm sure a pump action shotgun is more common and there are some people out there that can do this action lightning fast. But for the common person, what is better for self-defense, a semi-auto or pump action shotgun?

Which is better 9mm or .45? Ford or Chevy? Beatles or Led Zepplin?

I prefer an auto...most prefer pumps.

Good pumps are about a third of the cost of a good auto...which is part of the reason so many prefer pumps. Plus, a pump allows the operator to have more control of the firearm...for example, it is easier to chamber a round from the tube in an 870 than it is in a Benelli auto.

I terms of actually firing the shotgun in a defense mode, a pump forces the operator to be in 'deliberate control'...which is definitely a good thing.

Just my opinion...I'm sure you'll get a lot more.

Aw, come on...every one knows that 45 is better than 9mm, Ford is better than Chevy and Led Zeppelin is better than the Beatles.

Now...pump vs. auto...this one is tough!

Good points all around.

I have a pump, but I think I would like an auto as well. Both are good.

In the hands of a truly competent shot gun handler of all types.... It is only a matter of personal preference... For every one else it comes down to what you are most proficient with. From field strip and cleaning skills on up to repeatable results from various positions and such. For me that is the pump... I have seen too many missed game kills due to a failure to cycle on the autos...

I have both. Semi-auto is more fun to shoot, but my pumps get used for HD.

What's better? A double barrel with hammers and two triggers - simplicity in action

The pump is less expensive and they can be fired surprisingly fast. For me they offer a rythm with the pumping action that I think helps me shoot more accurately at moving targets, moreso than an auto does. It also gives you that pause that allows you to better re-assess your aim to ensure a better second shot if necessary.
Oh yeah, they aren't as ammo finicky and are usually more reliable and cleanliness isn't as big an issue.

Doesn't Ford win by default? I mean...didn't Chevy go bankrupt or something?

*puts on flame suit*

enough with the versus

forget the 9 vs. 45. go with .40 Smith & Wesson or .357 Magnum. Ford makes better Trucks & Vans. Chevy makes better cars. Have you seen the new retro Camero? The Beatles will always Be. So let it be. I guess this thread can be closed now. pump for all pratical purposes. Benelli Auto just for fun.

to each his own...i use the benelli for both

and sometimes use the pump for both...when i want to hear the 'chu-chunk' that supposedly scares the hell out of everyone within a 1 mile radius
