I see this thread popped up again and have an additional comment to my post on the first page.

Long ago, 1969 or so I had a cousin back from the USMC that would shoot trap every afternoon after work. He didn't want to shoot competitively but gradually moved from 12ga to 20 and finally to .410. First time I watched him was amazing.

I have 3. A semi auto. A pump and an under & over. I reload 2 1/2" & 3" 410's. I really enjoy them on the skeet field. The dove field and rabbit hunting. I'm 65 and have shot a 12 ga most of my life. Now I enjoy 20's & 410's more just for light weight and challenge.

The 410 taught me patience and shot placement

I was given a single shot 410 in the mid 1960s and turned loose on the country side. Over the years, I’ve had many models of the 410. I’ve hunted about everything with it. But if I went dove or waterfowl hunting today, I would probably use my single 20g or my 12g pump. Not that a 410 won’t do it, the others just do better at a further range. For rabbit or squirrel hunting, I tend to use #4 or #6 shot in a 3in shell.

Recently, for the first time in decades, I found myself without a 410. After looking around I bought a Stevens 301 single shot. It was inexpensive, lightweight and it had changeable choke tubes. It’s been my go to shotgun since day one. I was surprised how well it handled slugs. I plan on using it for deer hunting this season, but only at about 35 yards or less.

I have three 410's as well, really love shooting skeet with them and an occasional pheasant hunt when the weather is nice. I've tried to get turkey with a 410 for the last couple of years but you really need to be inside 25 yards and that's tough to do at my place.

Here's the Stevens 301 turkey 410 model. It will get you out to 40yds. They didn't have this model when I bought mine, or I would have got it just for the ability to mount optics on it. I'm thinking of getting the 12 gauge model and use it for deer hunting. They go for around $180

Thanks, that's a pretty neat gun, probably pick one up before next springs season.
O/U and vintage bolt guns are not good choices for mounting optics, looks like that little single shot is already tapped and threaded for a mount.
