next rifle?

Hi, new to forum. I'm looking for a bolt action rifle to hunt Whitetail and Mulies. I was thinking a .308 or 6.5x55mm. I would like a wood stock if i can get one in my price range that isnt stained hardwood. My price range is up to $600 but I can save more and buy later.

CZ 550. Available in both calibers with Walnut stocks, Monte Carlo or Mannlicher. They also come with a single set trigger that's great when you need the extra accuracy. I would go for the 6.5, just a personal preference.

I don't think you can go wrong with either caliber. For the sake of finding ammo and diversity of bullet selection, you might consider the .308. I'm not sure how many different loads are made for the Swede, but you certainly do fine with what's out there.

Thanks. I know Wolf, Norma, and Federal make factory loads for the Swede... but thats why theirs reloading. I'm thinking the .308 is popular enough across the country to counter-act Murphy's Law. The factory soft points from Wolf and Federal Will be plenty for Deer as they have worked for so long, why wouldn't they work any longer. I'll take a look tomorrow at those CZ's and let ya know.

The Remington 700 has been mad in 6.5 Swede in the past might still be.

30.06 is still more popular and easier to find ammo for than anyother rifle round that I know of.

I like them both and think that you could not go wrong with either round. Both round will be good out to 300 hundred yards with practicial hunting range out to 250 yards. I would think that most of your shots would be well under 200 yards. Pick a good rifle for yourself and it will last you a life time.

I have hunted with a 30-06 for over 30 years at Wisconsin white-tails and I think I have been over gunned for this animal. I had a custom 260 remington rifle built for me and have now put my 30-06 into long term storage.

PS - I have harvested a lot of white-tails with the 30-30, and will continue to hunt with this rifle, also.

Thnx all. That CZ 550 is a high possibility for my next rifle. They would have to order it and it would take about a week but for $600. Is that a good price or average from everyone has seen. I'd like to know im not getting ripped off but with my location being so far out... I can't really go on a long drive for one rifle.

Does that include tag, tax, title, and license? (meaning shipping, transfer fees, tax, etc?)

I'd find out if that includes rings (they're proprietary), and either try to talk him down a little or get him to throw in the rings. But if he's stuck on that price- I'd probly go for it. The CZ is a nice rifle that should last well beyond your shooting years. Like I said- I'd probly go for it... because I just really do love CZ's AND the old 6.5 Swede. Good luck and good shooting.

I don't think you could possibly go wrong with a .308 for the hunting you're looking to do.

As for the recommendations to get a CZ, that would be my first choice. The Mannlicher-stocked ones are my favorites.

Take a look at the Savage 110. Excellent rifle, outstanding accuracy and a good price. I own a 110 and I'm still impressed with its accuracy every time I shoot it. Granted, it's a little ugly with the barrel nut, but its a fine weapon.

As far as .308, you can't go wrong with that round. It's available every where with several commerical loadings for it. Its a little less powerful, with a little less recoil, than the 30.06, but has an outstanding reputation for accuracy.

I think Lispy's still has a few Ruger #1 special editions (stainless in wood) in stock for the Swede cartridge. I know the single shots don't get the nod very often but you might find it of interest. I think it's going for around $700.

You can get a Browning A-Bolt II Hunter for less than $600 US - its in low luster blueing and a walnut stock. I love the action on my A-Bolt in 300 Win Mag. The low luster blueing is somewhat susceptable to rusting, so next time I would get a Medallion in high luster blueing.

I liked the action on the Tikka's, but never liked the weight/feel of the new T3's. You may be able to find an Remington LSS in 308 for way less than $600. I found one for $543 in 243. Beautiful gun and I liked the feel. Almost bought one in 300WM before I got the Browning.

I like the actions of the Weatherby Vanguards, but I'm not sure of the accuracy. I'm sure they're around a MOA like the Mark V's.

If you stick with .308 you will have lots of options and will find plenty of good deals.
