This is my hunting truck. Chevy Silverado Z71, 2005. I bought it last August from a co-work that was transfered over seas. I had just sent my last child support check the month before.

The truck that gets me to the mountain is my 99 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel. 6spd with 4:11 R&P, powerlock front, detroit locker in the rear. I'm just over 300 hp and 700 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels. From the camp in, it's the horses' job to get me into the woods.

Well I think my trucks career as a hunting truck is almost over, it goes in Thursday for a nice shiny set of Flowmaster dual exhaust pipes. Single muffler with dual outlets and two big ol 2.5 inch pipes coming out the back end.
It had too much chrome to be a real good hunting truck now youll be able to hear and see it a mile away. You know what though this gives me an excuse to go to an auction sale and buy a cheap old beater chevy 4by gouger to have as a banging around rig.

Several people in this thread talked about Tacomas. If you own a 95- 00' Tacoma you should be aware of Toyota's current buy-back program. The frames are rusting out and they're giving owners 150% of the Kelly Blue Book value if the dealer determines that you've got a problem. This is something that Taco owners in the Northeast really need to follow-up on, the road salt we use up here is murder on these frames.
This is the best source of information that I've found: http://http://townhall-talk.edmunds....ew/.f11b1d2/11 |

2001 Toyota Tundra. SR5 TRD off road package. The small rear seat is just wide enough for gun cases, hunting gear and spare clothes.

dads was a 1975 ford f-100 302 auto trans. 4x2. then bought a 1980 f-150 302 auto trans. 4x4 8' with cap. i bought that from him and he bought an 84 f-150 i6 manual 4x2. the 80 got totalled one morning on our way out to hunting. luckily both the other driver and i were'nt hurt. used the money from the insurance company and a loan to buy me a 1986 f-150 302 auto trans. 4x4 8' bed without cap. bought that from the same uncle that sold the 80 to my dad that i later bought from him. i miss both my p/u trucks. i've been using an 87 ford wagon for the woods lately. no 4x4 aquired yet, but soon hopefully another f-150 or a bronco. i miss the 8' bed and plenty of room for camping stuff and boat hauling.

'93 F150, beat to heck but runs great. (302 EFI) It racked up 258K miles as a company fleet truck before I paid $600 for it. I don't abuse it, but I don't baby it either! GOT to have a truck in the country.

2001 Dodge Ram Heavy 2500 (not the lightweight 2500)4x4. This was originally a special ordered gov't model for the AZ state game warden in phoenix and has certain factory options that you can't get on a normal consumer model like a locker in the rear and limited slip (posi) up front with 4.55 gears and 285 tires and was "lifted" from the factory with an additional 2 inches of ride height compared to a "normal" 4x4 2500. Also it is the long bed model and has the 360 motor. Runs great and has all the lights and etc.. from it's days as a game warden truck (with the exception of the light bar on the roof). Also came pre wired for my radio's (think uhf/vhf and cb). This truck also had a locking gun rack behind the seat since it was considered a LEO vehicle. The truck was driven by the regional supervisor and barely saw the dirt road that most others saw so it was not beat to death like most trucks. The truck even had it's under frame stickers on it when I bought it and a huge locking tool box in the bed that is level with the bed. Of course i have used it in the country and mountains so it has probably seen more rocks and mud and sand in the last year than it did in it's first 5 years. Oh and get this I got the truck from the state auctions for $4500 (half of retail) with only 80k miles ..
I have added the above visor gun rack and a center console style rack and a lock box under the seat for a pistol and mags. For my real huntin' truck I have an old 81 Dodge Ramcharger (think blazer look alike) that has had a Dana 60 put in the rear with 4.10's and an ARB locker and a Dana 44 upfront with an ARB locker as well. It has a bone stock 318 that has over 200k on it and only needed a water pump replaced (don't worry I got a nice rebuilt 360 just waiting to be put in when the 318 goes) and a 727 with a NP205. This is a hunting and 4 wheeling truck. I did away with the factory lift blocks and went with 1 ton rear springs to prevent sag from the extra wieght of the rear and matched the front with identical lift 3/4 ton springs so it sits about 3 inches higher than factory and the NP205 xfer case is connected to the axles via custom driveshafts and rancho 9000's with a compressor all around. On board the truck is a rack on each rear window and a ceiling gun rack and each front seat folds over to reveal a lock box that contains up to 3 pistols each side. The top of the rear cab has a roof rack/basket that holds all the hunting gear and that way my dogs can sit in the back in comfort with a built in water and food dishes that have anti spill guards. Recently added 3 LCD monitors and an XBOX (for DVD's and games). So the kids watch Bambi while I am out hunting Bambi , and then I can play a little hunting or fishing games in the evening.

Hey, I think THALLUB from a few posts up might have my old Toyota. I loved that thing! I sold it to a guy from Waurika in 2002 to get the same truck in extended cab with a v6. You want to sell it someday you let me know where to pick it up at!
Tried a chevy, looking for more power than the old yota, but As for the Medicine Man's current huntin' wagon, I just picked up a 2006 Crewcab Toyota Tacoma 4x4, 6 speed manual, with electronic controled locker in the rear and averaging 17.5 mpg. A winchbumper is in the mail. Toyota historicaly has sold more of their trucks in crappy countrys where most of the roads aren't paved so they have to make a stout little 4x4 for that market, which they also happened to sell in the states. GM figures lets start with our two wheell drive cheerleader wagon and find the cheapest way to make the front wheels turn too. Then slap offroad decals on it, or at most some plastic skidplates. And as Hank Hill says, "It's one vanity mirror shy of a powderroom", stickered at 40 thou. uggh. :barf: |

Only chevy truck I would buy would be and 87 or older truck or early 90's or older suburban (this is when they switched from solid front axle to IFS). Personally 67-72 are my fav's for GMC and CHEVY, but those are kept in the driveway and are not my hunting trucks. JOE

Just got me a new toy. I'm pretty surprised at what it can do. Pretty fun to get sideways too.

My son and I have done some informal studies of trucks in our daily 1 1/2 hour commute and we’ve made some interesting observations.
First we've figured out that people who drive pickup trucks drive them more aggressively than those driving cars. Don't know what it is, but put a guy behind the wheel of a pickup and he's just a real stud. Speeding, tailgating, sudden lanes changes, abrupt stops and starts, little chirps outta the back tires every now then. What’s the point? Get a Lambo if ya want to go fast! Next are the 4-door pickups everyone and their cousin seem to be buying these days. Some of them have a bed short enough; you couldn’t fit a rifle in it. If you want to pack around five passengers, get a car. In fact they seem to be merely sedans on which the factory neglected to install the trunk lid. Except that being less than luxurious or sporty or comfortable, these things don’t make very good sedans either. What’s the point? Get a Camry if ya want a family sedan. Then we have the guys that spend a pile of money ruining a good truck. 24” lift kits, 19 shock absorbers, running boards, tonneau covers, aluminum diamond plate bumpers, 3” exhaust pipes and the obligatory 24” tall “Raiders” decal on the back window. All of this and we see these same guys driving the same commute every day. What’s the point? Get a life! Then there’s the lowered, long-bed, quad-cab, dually guys… ah, hell; see previous conclusion. Crack’s us up. Me? Don’t hunt. But if I start, I’ll take my 2003, bone-stock, 2WD, standard-cab, long-bed Tundra.
