Can I do it this way, without damaging something?

About a year ago my old Mossberg started having extraction problems. Took it to the local smith who cleaned out the chamber with a special tool. He said that it had a bunch of built up plastic and the like in there.

Solved the problem.

Over the last few months I've fired LOTS of CHEAP shells through it without a hitch. That is until today. Had one stick at the range.

Looks like those CHEAP shells have made a mess in there again. They are dirty to shoot.........

So what I want to know is if I can just take a bit of emery cloth or corse steel wool and scrub out the chamber? Will I damage anything, or will I make things worse.

The wire brush I use for the barrel does not fit the chamber tight enough to do any good.........

I'll wait for instructions before attacking it.

You can use fine (0000) steel wool. Don't use emery cloth.
There are solvents made for this, and chamber brushes available. You should buy them.

So what I need to do is be VERY careful of removing anything other than the accumulated mess, and very fine steel wool is safe for this.

I'll have a go at it.............

I do have another question, related..........

I have never had this happen in any other shotgun. Had a Mossberg 20 ga when I was a kid that I shot so much that the action bars had to be replaced yet it never did this. Same with a SXS 20 ga Browning I had.

Is this gun doing this because of some underlying problem with the chamber?

I do not believe so, I have had 870 chambers and mossberg chambers gum up from plastic residue.

My fix is to buy a tapered chamber brush on a shot handle from brownells, use a solvent such as carb cleaner to melt the plastic. Scrub the chamber with the chamber brush, and mop clean.

This usually fixes the problem.

You may have a ruff chamber, it can be polished if necessary.

Buy some actetone at Lowes or Home Depo.

BE SURE NO OTHER PLASTIC comes in contact with this liquid! Paint will also be removed keep it off of painted sights or beads.

Remove the barrel Swab the chamber with the pure acetone, It will remove the plastic.
