POA Load For Colt Police Positive Special Take 2
Does anyone have a .38 Special load that will shoot to POA in this gun. I couldn't find any 158 grain bullets so I got some 110's. They shoot about 6" low.

Sorry, but I don't know how you can load those 110 grainers to hit POA with your gun.

Sorry, I didn't mean a load for the 110's. I mean any load (probably 158's) that will shoot to POA.

It's the 158gr bullet ahead of a 'standard' load that should consistently shoot to POA for that revolver.
Most of those revolvers were 'calibrated' for 158gr bullets, just like most .45 Colt (Long Colt) revolvers are 'calibrated' for 250gr bullets. I have a S&W revolver that shoots exactly to POA with the 158gr bullets but shoots low with lighter bullets. Just like I have several 45LC revolvers that shoot low with anything lighter than 250gr, but are exactly to POA with 250gr. Any decent 'standard pressure' (not +P) wadcutter or round/flat nose lead bullet should shoot to POA for your Colt. |

I'm sure it was intended to use a 158 grain bullet at around 800-850 FPS. Any load that duplicates this should be as close as you can get. There's no guarantee it will be right on with any load.

Thanks for all the replies. As soon as we get back from a trip, I'm going to try 158's at 800 fps or so. The gun is in great shape (1960 manufacture) & a joy to shoot, It is a little small for my big hands.

Yea!!!
I found some 158 grain LSWC's. I loaded over 4 grains of Unique. It shot right to POA. I couldn't believe after shooting that low with the 110's, it would be dead on with the 158's.
Thanks for all the help, Cork

Pick a 158 gr. bullet, RN, RNFP, SWC, or TCFP and a powder such as Bullesye, HP-38, or Winchester 231 and start at the minimun charge and work up in .2 gr. (2/10gr.) increments and test fire each batch until you reach your desired point of impact.
The minimum charge should put your groups high, and come down as the charge increases. Bob Wright |
