Am I gonna be busy...270 win powder suggestions

My brother inlaw will be reloading with me for his 270 win. We are going to use SGK 140gr, any powder primer suggestions? Thanks!

What powders do you have on hand?

Pretty much any of the powders you use in your 308 can also be used in the 270. So I would start by looking at what you have on the shelf.

IMR-4831 is the gold standard for the .270 Win. ! I knew an oldtimer that used it without a scale , fill to bottom of neck and seat a 130 Gr. bullet and he was in business .

I really like 58.0gr IMR7828 under a 150gr SGK BTSP, with a CCI large magnum rifle primer.

Don't overlook IMR 4350 and H4350 also, and last but never least IMR4831.

It will depend upon your rifle and the barrel combination.
I have tried R15, R17 and R22, Varget and IMR 4350.
My .270 shoots most accurately with IMR 4350 powder.
It also seems to shoots Remington Core Lokt 130 grain bullets better than anything else. The good thing is that the Core Lokts are some of the lest costly bullets and work just fine on eastern deer.

I have tried both WLR, Federal 210, and Winchester Magnum primers.
It seems to shoot more accurately with the magnum primers, although the point of impact is one inch to the left compared to the regular large rifle primers but surprisingly no significant difference in the vertical.

I was looking at the load data from Sierra, hunting load they used RL-22. I was thinking of giving it a try. When I called Sierra about reloading my AR they powder the tech suggested was dead on. Just want to hear from others experiences also. On hand I have: Varget, Imr4064, cfe223, blc2 and h335

I use Norma cases, CCI BR2, H4831sc, and 130 gr Nosler BT's. My powder load is pretty hot, being above max in a few books, but I was using that load before the books said it was a hot one, so maybe I'm 'grandfathered'.

We have had very good results with R-22 behind 130 gr. SGK bullets.

I am loading with IMR-4350.

Other good choices, one downside to the IMR is its long grain and does not dispense real well.

I don't care as I setup to under dispense and trickle on up to the right level

The gun I am loading for (family gun) does not care for factory ammo and is looking much better with the IMR.

It has a good wide range and I like that in a powder as those tend not to be picky (you can hit the sweet spot easily as you just have to land in a fairly wide band with the IMR) . Then see where it sits for velocity and you may just leave it there.

Since you have IMR4064 on the shelf, start with it at it seems to be the best option you currently have.

140 GR. SFT SP IMR IMR 4064 .277" 3.280"
42.0 2608 43,300 CUP 46.1 2828 50,800 CUP

You are using a different bullet, so work up accordingly.

IMR 4350, 4381, and 7828 will all give a faster velocity on a max load, but even going to a slower cartridge won't get you past the 3,000 fps (at least with Hodgdon's Data). No need to drive a soft point boat tail very fast either, they open up just fine even at relatively modest velocities.

We will be using the 140gr HPBT, its not the match bullet it is a GK. General question, what is a good step up in grains to use? .3-.5 grains? I used .3gr when test loading for my AR, but these cases (.270) hold A LOT of powder.

I agree with Jimro. Start with some of your IMR-4064. Check out some loading manuals for a decent start point. I would work up 1 grain at a time and check for accuracy and pressure. If you hit an accuracy sweet spot, and you have sufficient velocity, then you can try tweaking it by tenths of a grain, if you like. You could also play with seating depth, different primers, bullets, etc. If you don't like your results with IMR-4064, you could try some of your Varget, but results may be similar as they are very close to the same burning rate. Other, slower burning powders that are popular with the .270 are 4350 (H, IMR and Accurate), 4831 (H and IMR), Accurate 3100, Reloder 19 and 22, Ramshot Hunter and Magnum, Winchester 760 and 780, H-414 and VihtaVuori N-165. Also IMR-7828 and maybe even H-1000. If you opt for just using the IMR-4064 or Varget that you already have on hand, you might give up 100 to 200 fps of velocity, but you might be happy with the accuracy and milder recoil of the faster burning powders.

I loaded some reduced recoil loads for my daughter a couple years back with IMR 4064 (46.0gr, IIRC) and 130 gr Speers.... she dropped a doe DRT with it. Out of the 10 lb rig (scoped Remmy 721) she used, it did not kick at all.

I use 46 grains of H335 or 47 grains of IMR4064 to get 3K f/sec with 110 gr V-Max bullets for prairie dogs and milk jugs. I burn far more of the 4064 in my .270 than anything else. I've used it for everything from 90 grain Speer HP to nearly every brand of conventional cup and core 130 gr spitzer out there (whatever was on sale!)

Other powders I have used that worked well: H414, H4831, and H4831SC (metered better than the 4831, but not always available at my LGS). The H414 had a smaller SD and less velocity variation due to low powder temps when used with a magnum primer.

H1000 did not perform up to published data.

Mohr308,

I would do an initial .5 grain workup from starting to max charge to ensure safety, with the bullet seated for magazine length. 42, 42.5, 43, 43.5, 44, 44.5, 45, 45.5, 46, 46.1. This gives you ten shots and shows the load safe in that rifle.

After that initial safety check I'd do 5 shots each from a grain under max 45.1gr, 5 shots 45.4gr, and 5 shots 45.7gr, and 5 shots 46 gr. to see where best accuracy lies near max velocity (this is a hunting load I'm assuming). Pick the load that groups the tightest to the groups .3 above and .3 below (sort of an OCW method).

If you want to maximize accuracy after that, play with seating depth as necessary. Although Unclenick has a method for finding seating depth first that is pretty good if you want to try it.

Thanks for the tips, its been awhile since I worked up a load for larger cal. Yes this will be a hunting load, wont really need accuracy past 300 yds.
