9mm defensive ammo

heres a pic of defensive ammo.

all were fired from 10', at 1gal water jugs lined up, touching.

left is 9mm hornady critical defense 115gr ftx. penetrated 1 jug, stayed in the second.

middle 9mm is wwb personal defense 115gr. penetrated same as above.

right is .32 acp hornady XTP 60gr. penetrated 3 jugs and cut the 4th.

I'm still a bigger fan of 147 grain HST's, Ranger T's and Gold Dots.

Shooting hollowpoints into water does not create an accurate representation of their penetrative properties in human tissue. Water generally induces hollowpoints to expand perfectly due its physical properties while also allowing less penetration that human tissue.

yes, i realize this, but it shows how a brand of hollow point will preform in a perfect environment.

if the hp doesnt open up in water, it very likely ain't going to open up in flesh.

plus i dont have any convenient flesh to shoot.

Actually, there is a company selling prepackaged ballistics gel kits under the name "Perma-Gel" now... you can even buy them through Cabela's for around $150. If you had a chronograph and an airgun that will do 600fps (to calibrate the block), you could even post results that ballistics research scientists could independently verify.

I've been thinking that now that shooting a box of ammo costs about as much as the gel kits, I might have to start playing with one

127g WW Ranger T Awesome.

The various Police testing labs use water to safely fire rounds into for comparison testing. Because the bullet enters at an angle, the expansion is canted also, in the case of Hollow Point's. No matter they are just looking to match a recovered round with a firearm.

I have done this testing with a dead large animal carcass on our farm. I choose FMJ as it penetrated thru bone and fur the best.

Plug that hollowpoint by shooting thru some denim, and you'll have a few more surprises. All handgun rounds are not too good at killing things quickly.
