Follow the data in the reloading manual or call up Hornday? Factory chambers are generous. Get a load that works then mess with COAL.

Patchy:
Get yourself a Stoney Point O.A.L Gauge and the threaded .204 cartridge. You can then use it to measure OAL with each bullet you use. Examples in my CZ .204: With Sierra 32 BK the OAL is 2.447"; with a Sierra 39 BK OAL is 2.441". The OAL measurements will vary slightly due to the variations in the tip conditions (lead tip sometimes is dented; hollowpoints are uneven, etc) so I use what I call the Base to Ogive (BTO) measurement. Get a bullet comparator (Sinclair, Stoney Point, etc) to use with you calipers and when using the OAL gauge instead of measuring from base to tip measure from base to ogive. Much more consistent. My .204 seems to shoot best in 32 grain with a .015" setback. Experiment and see what your chamber responds to. Good shooting! |

Patchy:
The Base to Ogive measurements on my CZ .204: 32 Sierra BK is 1.997"; 39 Sierra BK is 1.990". I seat my 32 Sierras at 1.985" (- .015") and with 27.5 H335 five shots measured .472" at 100 yards. Four of the five shots measured an almost unbelievable .198". I have not had anything like that with the 39 grain Sierras. The cartridge overall length (COAL; OAL) found in the manuals are a reflection of 1) SAMMI specs, and 2) the magazine size in the rifle and do not reflect the leade in the rifle's chambering. My CZ magazine's max OAL is 2.235" which leaves .010" clearance for the bullet tip. It really has nothing to do with the most efficient bullet "jump" to reach the lands. I don't use my magazine as I have replaced it with a CZ 527 Magazine Follower by James Calhoun. That way I can load the cartridge that has the OAL that I want, and I find the single-shot mode is just fine. Mesillajim |

Accurate Powder.
SPECIAL NOTE ON CARTRIDGE OVERALL LENGTH “COL” It is important to note that the SAAMI “COL” values are for the firearms and ammunition manufacturers industry and must be seen as a guideline only. The individual reloader is free to adjust this dimension to suit their particular firearm-component-weapon combination. This parameter is determined by various dimensions such as 1) magazine length (space), 2) freebore-lead dimensions of the barrel, 3) ogive or profile of the projectile and 4) position of cannelure or crimp groove. |
