loose 870 forend

I have an 870 about 15 or so years old. I've noticed the forend seems too loose. I can hold the receiver shake the gun and the forend will move back slightly. When shooting slugs or buck shot it's difficult to keep the forend forward. Is there a way of tightning this? I'm not super familiar with shotguns. I didn't find much when I searched.

Make sure your not shooting 3 inch mag shells out of a 2&3/4 receiver first. What does it say on the sides of the barrels near the reciever?

The only play I have on my 870 wingmaster is side to side once the gun has locked into battery.

It will stay lock up when cocked. No side to side play, so it must be ok. I guess it's just getting old and loose like me.

Also make sure your magazine tube cap is tightened down as well...its the cap on the end of the tube that the forend slides back and forth on.

The cap or threaded metal ring that secures the forearm to the action bars may be the issue. Remington used to have a special tool for it. I take needle nose pliers and wrap black electrical tape on the ends of the pliers to preclude scratching and dinging the area up. It is a slow process but it will work.

I vote with Will Beararms that the "fore-end tube nut" has come loose. Be careful tightening it with needle nose pliars. You can get a wrench on Ebay or a better one from MidWay.

I replaced my forend using the 870 "slide assembly" for a wrench.

If the tube nut is tight, is it possible that the action bars of your tube assembly are worn out. If so, the striations on your magazine will kind of curve as opposed to being staight.

I don't really know what I am talking about, but read this somewhere.

Yes, check this ^^ first. some of those are so tight they are almost impossible to get off. Others have a habit of working loose after a time. I've used the needle nose pliers to fix them as well.

Forend wrenches are all over the place for about 5 bucks.

Buy quality once, or buy cheap over and over again.

I have a wrench from Brownell's. It has two fitted ends--one takes care of Remington pump action shotguns, the other Mossberg and Winchester. Easy to use, too--and it's the only way to keep from boogering up the fore end nut.
