Lyman 311299

Interested in this bullet for accuracy and upper velocities (2000 fps or above) in 30-06 and 300 Win Mag. Powders used and alloy used (hardness if known) to achieve marks would help in regards to determining accuracy and velocities of this bullet. I have the new 06 and friend the 300 WM; knowing that the 300 maybe trickier since it has the short case neck but would like to hear of people experiences with the Lyman 311299 design in these cartridges.

The best cast bullet for 30 calibers is the Lyman 311041, 311291, or RCBS 30-180-FN. If you go to www.castboolits/gunloads.com, you'll find a wealth of knowledgeable people including yours truly that will help you squeeze the utmost in accuracy from your hardcast.

Based on discussions at Cast Bullets, I purchased a Lyman 311299 mold and a 311284. Both of these bullets weigh close to 200 grains.

Both of these molds produce bullets that shoot well in a number of 30-06 rifles. I found I needed to put a gas check on the base, and having done that, these bullets shot well.

I can recommend AA5744 as a powder to use with these bullets. AA5744 just has done very well, low ES's and accurate, with my cast bullets.

These bullets are too long for use in a 30-30. I then purchased a Lyman 311041 mold, bullets weight about 173 grs. This bullet shoots well in my 30-30. I have not tried it in 30-06 but I am certain it will do well in most 30 calibers.

My bullets do well around 1800 fps. I get blown groups when they go much faster. Trying to get 2000 fps, I don't think that is something for a novice, and it is certainly not for me. You really have to play with alloys, lubes, sizes, etc. I don't have the time or the inclination for the effort.
