Fitting a bbl from a Rem. to a Sako
Can a barrel from a Remington 700 be re-threaded to fit on a Sako action?
I tried to screw a Remington bbl into a Sako action just to see if the threads matched and found the Remington threads were larger in diameter than what the Sako could take, which lead me to wonder, could the bbl be re-threaded to fit the Sako? Any of you smiths ever done this? |

Elkslayer, I've rebarreled Sakos but haven't used a Rem take-off for it. However it can be done. The largest Sako shank diameter I've ever seen is 1" in the 579 and even after turning the threads off of a Rem you would still have a bit more than that left. And of course you'd have to face off the breech recess and machine the breech for the sako extractor. It uses an angled cut/depression that deepens as it goes around the breech radius. George

I really appreciate the info!
You basically have just told me that a very reasonably priced custom barrel in a 30-06AI complete with dies is more trouble than it is worth for me to put onto my new, in the white Sako action. You've really saved me from a major headache and unexpected cost getting this rig mated up. Hats off to ya! |
