Rule 8.1.3 states that you may carry two mags on your belt plus one in the gun if the magazine capacity is 8 or more rounds. CDP is limited to 8 rounds. You may have a total of four mags of 6 or 7 rounds.

The IDPA rules are available for download on the IDPA website.

CDP Mags

To start a stage with a CDP handgun, you load one round in the chamber and a magazine containing 8 rounds. You carry 2 extra mags on your belt each containing 8 rounds giving you a total of 25 rounds available.

This may seem like a stupid question, but................... I am stepping over from SSP where you can load your mags to 11, 10 and 10 for division capacity if you have larger mags.

How do you guys get that extra round for the first mag in in CDP? Do you just chamber a single round by hand then insert a full 8 rounder? Or do you have an extra mag with just 1 round in it for loading? I am wondering what is the safest and best for the weapon itself.

Most folks have a separate magazine just for loading that first extra round for each course of fire.
Dropping a single round into the chamber is not considered healthy for extractors.

That is what I was thinking.

This is known as the Barney Mag and is usual for CDP or single stack ESP.
It avoids a lot of fumbling around on the LAMR.

like the others I use a barney mag, but I do load it with 8 rounds and put it back in my pocket, the rules allow you to use it if needed.

That's sort of confusing. It suggests that the fourth mag that everyone carries for loading the chamber, can be used during the CoF "if needed".
You can use a total of three 8-round mags. Most everyone keeps a fourth mag specifically for loading the chamber on LAMR.
The drill is to rack a round into the chamber from the barney mag, put the barney in a place where you will not be tempted to touch it during the CoF, put a full 8-rounder in the gun, then holster.

Well I haven't actually had to use the fourth mag in long time, did they change the rule in the last year or two?

The rules actually say:

Quote:
8.1.4. Loading Device (Magazine, Speed Loader, Moon Clip) Count
8.1.4.1. Shooters starting with 8 or more rounds in all loading devices are allowed to start with the loaded firearm plus two additional loading devices.
8.1.4.2. Shooters starting with 6 or 7 rounds in all loading devices are allowed to start with the loaded firearm plus three additional loading devices.
8.1.4.3. Shooters starting with 5 or fewer rounds in all loading devices are allowed to start with the loaded firearm plus four additional loading devices.
8.1.4.4. No additional loading devices beyond the above limits may be used during a string.
and

Quote:
8.6.1.3. One additional ammunition carrier may be worn behind the centerline of the body for the purposes of loading at the start of a stage. This carrier must be empty before the “Stand By” command.
So you may NOT use your Barney Mag if you run out of ammunition. Which you should not, you get at least 24 rounds SSR, 25 CDP, 31 SSP, ESP to make a maximum of 18 hits.

There's lots of arguing that can be avoided during a match if everyone attending would just read the rules before they get there.

The majority appear to prefer to learn the rules one procedural penalty at a time.
