.223 OAL

I'm trying to work up a 55gr JHP load that matches the accuracy of a 62gr JHP Remington premier match load. The 62gr load has an OAL of 2.170 inches.

Looking at my load manual, there are no 55gr jacketed loads that go below 2.200 minimum OAL. None of the 62 gr even go below 2.223 OAL for that matter...

Do I start at 2.200 OAL and work my way down? Start at 2.17 and work my way up? What signs should I look for? I'll be using IMR4895 since I already use it for .30-06

If you are trying to match OAL and how it relates to the lands and grooves, you need to measure off the Ogive of the bullet not the tip.

If you are trying to match accuracy of a 55gr Handload to a 62gr Factory load, your OAL will have minimal affect on accuracy compared to bullet type, weight, brand, shape, etc. Powder will most likely have a greater affect on accuracy than your OAL.

Start long, 2.250, and find an accurate bullet powder combo. Once you find that, then reduce OAL in small increments to fine tune your already accurate load.
