Universal Background Check Backlogs
Two states that recently mandated universal background checks are experiencing huge backlogs. CO has recently revamped their fingerprint system and hired additional personnel in response to a backlog.

Of course, there's nothing saying they have to increase payroll or work hours. They could simply let the backlog build.
In the days following Sandy Hook, it wasn't uncommon to be unable to get through to NICS at all.

Colorado peaked at 8 days wait in January. During the push for a bill to mandate private background checks, someone testified that they couldn't keep up now, so it would never work the way they were planning.
Surprise, surprise, within 3 days the backlog was cleared. |

CO, CT and MD do not have NICS as most of us know it. They have a system where folks rely on state bureaucrats for their background checks.

Colorado has it's own state system that is run, CBI, and after that is sent to NICS. When both come back, THEN the sale can continue.

I think Virginia has one of the best. The form is almost exactly the same as the National check but you have to fill out both. Once it is filled out, the approval comes back in a couple of minutes. Once you have decided on what you are going to buy, you can be out of the store in under 15 minutes with your gun.
