SASS sanctioned long range buffalo shoots

I see the Cowboy club is having these as a side match at the state championship... this seems more up my alley than the speed shooting... I tried looking both on the club's website, as well as the SASS website & found very little info actually...

so... some of you guys seem to have all the answers

my Martini's are not legal, as they have no external hammer ???

both my Remington & Navy Arms rolling blocks are legal ( 32-40 in the Remington, 40-65 in the Navy ) ???

my Unertl scope ( currently mounted on my Remington ) is not legal because of the micrometer adjustments on the scope ???

would my Russian double rifle in 45-70 be legal ( though not a long range gun ) ( it has exposed hammers )???

are my Thompson Contenders legal ??? ( sans scopes & such... not the 375 Winchester, but the 45-70 )

if all of that is true, looks like my 40-65 is my only rifle, unless the Contender is legal ??? ( 40-65 wears globe sights )

any idea how far they call long range ???

anyone ever shot one & can offer some detail of the shoot you went to would be great

Hello Wheel Man,

Try this site www.BPCR.net they have a ton of info on reloading shooting etc. On the links page is a bunch of sites and if I remember there is a club in WI that shoots 800 900 1000 yard long range matches. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the answers & links... it took a couple days... but I heard back from the club...

this is what I learned so far...

There are three class in the long range. Single shot Buffalo, Sharps or Rolling blocks in typical black powder cartridges 45-70/90/110, 40-70 38-55 ect
Lever rifle, rifle caliber 30-30 38-55 45-70
Lever rifle , pistol caliber your normal main match gun
Everything has to be loaded with cast lead bullets only. No bottle neck military calibers 30-40 krag 30-06 ect.
We have about 125 yard range that is set up in a hunting mode. You don’t get to see the targets until it is your time to shoot, so it is a lot of fun.

to me... 125 yards is not long range... errr well maybe for my 38 special cowboy loads in my lever action... maybe they'll use a couple sizes of targets to simulate further distances...

I think I'm going to use my Navy Arms Rolling Block in 40-65

"Long range" is going to be dictated by the parameters of the range. 125 yards is probably all the room they have there. I've not shot them, but I've been to shoots that there were targets at 300+. YMMV.
