New .30-06!

My Grandpa gave me his .30-06 bolt action rifle as a graduation present. It's his *favorite* and yeah, I'm stoked!
Anyway, I've never handled this particular rifle before and I'd like as much information on it as possible.
Any information would be appreciated.

People here'd be happy to help you out, but you didn't tell us what the make/model is!

You can get cheap, decent 30/06 surplus from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Get your practice in.

You said you've never handled this one before. I assume you've handled weapons before - please familiarize yourself with your new acquisition so that you can be safe. Figure out the manual safety, cycling, bolt removal, etc. before putting ammo anywhere near it. Sorry to beat a dead horse if you're already aware, just always good to cover your bases.

You might want to look into snap caps before dry firing, depending on what it turns out to be. If it's older you don't want to damage the firing pin.

Welcome to the forum - this will get moved to the "Art of the Rifle" subforum - try to post under the relevant topic

Congrats on your new rifle!

Thanks bclark1.
Yes, I've handled weapons before from a Ruger Mark III .22 pistol to my hubby's 7MM rifle and his AK47. I don't know, really, anything about my new rifle yet. I'll find out more tomorrow.

Welcome to the Firing Line, MeNoLikeTofu. (I don't like tofu, either!) Be sure to come back and tell us what model/make 30-06 you've been given.

Bclark was right. Moving to the Art of the Rifle.
